Suspending insurance?

After a search of boards I couldn't seem to find any insurance appropriate forum, so it looks like this is my best bet. I did find this thread but it's of little help to my question.

My car insurance expires in 2 days (November 5th) and to the best of my knowledge I will not be using the car anytime between now and next may (because of colled) so I've decided not to renew it. However, there is one occasion in late December where I will be needing it. I'm wondering is it possible to freeze/pause/suspend my insurance between now and the date so I can use it when I need it? I know suspending your insurance CAN be done, I am however skeptical that suspending such a short term will probably not be accepted.

So, in anticapation of a big fat N - O to the preceding question, I shall now ask what are my alternatives? Or to be a little less vague and throw up some suggestions of my own:

    • Is it possible to get extremely short term car insurance? My parents are insured on it so it would be more of a temporary addition to the named driver list than an actual new contract?
    • How much would a rental car cost for approximately 12 - 24 hours?
    • How much of a discount is offered for 'away from home' or 'Weekend' drivers who will be doing EXTREMELY small amounts of mileage throughout the year? Is it worth it for the no claims discount and occasional dropping my Dad to the pub at the weekends?
Thanks in advance for your time, I hope I have been fulfilling on the details... If not here are some more anyway. I have only recently passed my test (1st time) and haven't purchased insurance on a full licensed driver rate yet. As mentioned, the car belongs to my parents and they will have it ensured in the meantime and there is a large probability (1/365) that the car will already be insured during the period requested. and after that I'm not too sure. I'm 18 years old and have been on 12 months of insurance cover already. If there is anyway of doing this without me having to cash out anymore than 30 - 50 euros that'd be great.

If I'm missing anything or breaking any rules please call me out. I haven't spent much time in this section of boards before.

    Hi

Yes you should be able to suspend your policy, however most insurers will insist on taking your direct debits during the period of suspension, then, if you suspend it for more than a month or so, they will refund you for the period you were not on cover.

Most insurance companies insist on a yearly contract, however it might be worth checking with a few brokers who might be able to help you regarding short term policies. I would suspect there would be quite a bit of expense attached to these types of policies though:)

With regard to the hire car. It wouldn't be too expensive for a day or two, but you will always pay more then the hire company quote online, as you will need to take the hire companies insurance, as you will not have your own policy.

Also, a lot of hire companies insist on you being over 21 with a full license for 2 years or more. Some may hire you a car, but will charge a premium if you are under a certain age.

    Hope this helps

    Matt

    Hope! Fantastic, thank you!

I'll make arrangements first thing in the morning! And, of course, report back. I'm still a little skeptical but that has more to do with never being disappointed if you're never expectant than anything else :)
