Diesel Mondeo chugging

Mondeo 2.0TDi started chugging about 1230am tonight. Engine chugs regularly, every two seconds, jerking the car roughly, but doesn't cut out.

Now I think the fuel might be low, as the gauge doesn't work. But I thought there was still a reasonable amount in it, going by the mileometer.

    a) Is she running out of fuel? Do diesel Mondeos behave like that when running out?
    b) Has this done damage to the injectors or pump?
    c) Should I add diesel and see what happens, or is there more needs doing?
    c) Is this nothing to do with running low on fuel, but something else?

Has anyone encountered this, that might offer any solutions? Many thanks.

Not the TDCi, the TDDi I think it's called. 2.0 diesel.

if its very low in diesel, all the sh1t from the bottom of the tank may well sucked into the system and now its running rough.

I'd change the fuel filter, half fill it with diesel, and feck a bottle of injector cleaner into it, and take it for a good hot run.
