Just had my renewal notice through for house insurance and Quinn have added a service charge which they say is 'statutory'.

Is this just a way of hiding increased premiums or is it kosher?

Sounds like its kosher alright, they can charge pretty much what they want for their service.

Could be removable at the agents discretion if you make an issue of it over the phone though.

The 3% Govt. Levy is statutory. Any interest charge for direct debit or service charge is not. They are additional charges by the insurer, though not easily avoided.

Quinn also charge 3% on health insurance plans. VHI & Aviva do not. This charge should always be factored in the overall price.
