The brother is after buyin a new S/S a few weeks ago , its a lovely Baikal , brand new. 28 inch barrels with 1/2 and Full choke and a double trigger , was out the first day there on tuesday and he's a great shot usually but cant seem to hit a thing with this new S/S , lotsa handy shots missed . Anyone any advise what size shot to use , the gun seems heavily choked to me

1/2 and full choke is pretty much a standard with Baikal SXS.Hate to say it but I dont think it is the gun.;):eek:Changing the ammo isnt going to do much either,as it is still affected by the chokes. What types of shots is he missing?IE quatering, coming on ,going away, high low?
It's hard to say unless somone sees him shoot with the gun.
Might be that the stock isnt fitting him right,as Baikal do a kind of one size fits all stock.

More lead, keep the head down and keep swinging through the shot.

you can widen your pattern by using fibre wadded cartridges they tend to spread faster than plaswad type shells

Yeah as Grizzly says because if it aint pointing in the right direction, he won't hit anything.

I have a Remington full choke in the packet and it says best results No4 shot and smaller.... meaning 5-6-7-8-9

He has been using Hull 34g 5's , 32g 5's and 34g 6's . If he's using bigger shot in the tight choke will that make the spread wider due to lesser number of pellets? or will smaller shot and more pellets make the pattern tighter and more focused with less spread?

With a tightly choked gun I would recommend 28-30g 7s in a fibre wad, he is using too much lead and in a tightly choked gun the lead will bunch and create a long shot string. If he hasn't used a sxs before that could be the problem, I had u/o in half and full and could hit very well with it.

Smaller pellets will spread more but I wouldn't go too small for pheasant, the old saying sixes and sevens still applys today. 34g 5's are for shooting high birds on a driven day imo.
