Im off 17, last 5 comps ive shot 34/35/36 pts etc etc, in my buffer but feckin not enough to get cut, do you think my club will decrease my hcap at the end of the year anyway or can they do that?

No tones69 based on those scores your playing to a 19/18/17 hc. No need to cut you based on this.

    Very unlikely ....
Unless you had a few wins in team events matchplays etc

You can always go to your handicap secretary and ask him to cut you. Some friends of mine did that as they felt it might make them play better.

sounds like a good tactic to take
i know a bloke who was an 18 handicapper, asked to be cut to 14, and within no time was playing at 14
golf is all about mental positioning
if ur swipe says you're a 22 handicapper, you'll play along those lines more often than not
this correlation becomes extremely robust when one has been sitting on a particular handicap for 12 months +
humans are creatures of habit. the above stats only confirm that evidence of this exists on the golf course

    Helluva scientific argument there bud.
Annual reviews take place this month so get your spoke in early if you want them to review your case... of course, you can always play off a lower handicap than you're entitled to as well :)

Was actually thinking that to be honest, 5 months ago when i started they issued me with 16 and i played a few comps as i knew i couldnt play to it and got it to 17..Now after countless rounds, countless drivnig range sessions, driving, short game, putting etc etc im after improving a good bit and i feel like i could play to 15 or 16 with no probs whatsoever, i think the fact that they gave me 16 made me want to improve my game and play to it quickly

You just need a couple of days where it all clicks and you'll be down to 16 and lower in no time at all. Best of luck!

Tones, would you not feel better and get a greater sense of accomplishment by getting cut through your own scores rather than an arbitrary cut by a handicap sec ? That way you can really feel like you "earned" that particular handicap.

Don't worry about what number your handicap is, if you keep returning cards it will find its own level, whatever that may be. Don't get too hung up on it, its only a number.

As a general point and not necessarily aimed at you, its one thing to be able to play to a handicap when knocking around with friends or to say you can play to a certain handicap, it can be another thing entirely to play to it with a card in the pocket. Thats part of the learning experience in the game.
