Eligibility for Grant

My son completed 1st Engineering in NUIG the academic year 2010/2011. He duly passed after the repeats. However, he has decided that he wants to change to Arts and has for 2011/12 started again in 1st Arts.
He received no grant in the year 2010/11.
However, my income has dropped significantly in 2010 and my income would allow him qualify for a grant for 2011/12 in normal circumstances. However, after getting all the documentation together for the Grant Application I was told that he does not qualify in these circumstances i.e. because he is going back to do 1st Arts!

Can anyone confirm that this is actually the case as my wife says that it was not entirely clear on the Citizens Advice information leaflet she was reading that this was the case.

PRetty much, no entitlement for the grant were the same year has been attempted at the same level or lower. So if he did 1st eng and then did 1st arts, probably not entitled to the free fees, and certainly not the maintenance grant.

Yes - he won't qualify in 2011/2012 but can reapply in 2012/2013

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
