    Hi all,

I finally want to get rid of my 10 yr old nokia & think its time to upgrade! I am a pay as you go customer & dont want to enter into contract.

I am not technology minded & was wondering if someone could recommend what would be the best phone? I love the look of the IPhones but the market is totally saturated with IPhones so Id like something different.

I also like the look of the HTC Sensation S but have no experience with this phone.

    Im grateful for any recommendations!!

I've switched back and forth over the last three years. Went for an iPhone 3GS to a Samsung Galaxy, to Desire HD, then an Xperia Play before getting an iPhone 4S. Right now I prefer the iPhone but that may well change again, it really is a case of personal preference.

The only thing I will say is that as a gamer, the quality and variety of iPhone games is better than Android.

Having used a HTC Desire S, Samsung Galaxys II and an Iphone 4 16G. I can honestly say the HTC was by far the best in terms of
    • styling
    • speed
    • features
    • audio
    • HD size (expanded both android to 64G)
    • battery life (samsung worst)
    • GPS features (iphone worst)

I think i might sell all three and get a Sensation XE on prepay and throw my Sim into it. The iphone is easy to use but very restrictive if you want to personalise or customise the phone in anyway. The Galaxy S II was an amazing screen but it ate the battery. For looks, battery life, features go with the HTC.

edit:* not sure about Games. I dont really use the phones for games.

    Thanks for both replies!

Its just so hard to choose as there are so many options!

I'd agree with Riamfada in so much as if you're going for an Android, make sure it's a HTC. The Desire HD was and still is a lovely phone, by far the best Android I've used and having played around with a Sensation XE, it's a step up. Think the standard Sensation has some pretty nasty battery issues though.

I've had both - an iPhone 3GS and a HTC Desire - and to be honest the HTC is streets ahead in my view of the iPhone in terms if usability and general all round usefulness due to apples stupid restrictions and insistence on using iTunes for everything so I would go for an Android phone if I were you.

Also, Android is now the number 1 smartphone platform by a fair amount and it's getting bigger every day.

    I've owned the following:

    iPhone 3g,3gs,4
    HTC Desire, Desire HD
    Samsung Galaxy S2.

Although iPhone OS is sleeker and slightly more polished than Android, overall my preference is Android.

Original Desire was great, the HD also great. That got robbed, and as a HTC fan was going to replace it with a HTC Sensation, but after some hands on, I decided on the Samsung Galaxy s2.

I think the s2 is the best..and although, as has been mentioned , it's battery wasn't great, a quick update through kies solved this completely and is now performing better than the desire HD was, giving 2 days of light to medium usage.

The s2 also looks better, more modern and weighs far far less than the others..this is all just my opinion ofcourse, some people rather heavier phones more metals etc being utilised in the design.

The only negative about the galaxy s2 is the predictive text..it's brutal.

Thats an easy fix, install a better keyboard like swiftkey or Swype, there are lots more on the market. The beauty of Android is you can make what you want of it, you can't do same with the iPhone

Janey, when I was 10 I got a lolo ball and a card. How times have changed.

I've just brought my Sensation back to meteor for the second time for the same fault, so I might not be the best person to give an opinion right now!

Why do you want to be different? Isn't it just a matter of choosing which phone you prefer....?

    .

How do I do this update. I'm having battery problems with my galaxy but I love the phone, much prefer to the iphone 4 that I had.

    Easy..download samsung kies http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobilesoftwaremanual/mobilesoftwaremanual.do?page=MOBILE.SOFTWARE.MANUAL

Once you have done that, open it up and attach your phone to you pc via usb cable. Wait for kies to detect your phone, once it does it will automatically check so see if an update is available and ask you if you want to download it. Click yes.

What version are you running now? Go to Settings...About phone..what does it say under 'kernel version'?

He doesn't want to be the same as all the people going around with iPhones and all being the same. At least with android you can customize them a bit and not all be the same.

Op. Android and iPhone are good. Personally it's a simple choice between the two but sure that's only my opinion. Obviously others would rather iPhone. To be honest, if your coming from an ancient nokia then you will be delighted with whichever you go for. The battery life might be a shock to you though lol.

Sorry, I still don't get it.

If you really want to be different keep the 10 year old Nokia.

    ...or get a tattoo?

Thats the case with any keyboard or any app you put info into almost. The android/iphone/nokia/blackberry/any keyboard can do the same. It has to be able to identify what you type to put it onto the screen!
    People are really getting paranoid.
The only way to avoid info being collected on you really is to sit in a dark room with no connection to the outside world.

well I trust Google with those details more than some random person that developed an app!

It learns from you and predicts the word you need next based on your previous conversations, contacts, personal info etc, therefore it needs your permission to do so

It's not some random person though, is it? Google will pull any apps that are shown to be malicious. The information is not sent from your phone.

    You need to calm down.

Em, yes they are some random person, just because they have a company name/website does not mean otherwise.
The warning message that says SwiftKey may be able to collect ‘all the text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers’ is a part of the Android operating system that appears when any third party keyboard is enabled.

As they say themselves, that warning is from Google. The warning is there for a reason, to cover Googles ass if a dodgy developer does access your info.

However, they do go on to say that they do not collect your data(even tho they do have the ability to do so). I'm sure this app is fine, but if it was a dodgy app, of course they are going to tell you they don't collect your info.

Would you give me your CC info/passwords? No. If I built a deadly keyboard app would you trust me with those details now? Yep.

    Ah don't install it then.
The warning is there. What else do you expect them to do? It's a keyboard app. It has to capture your keystrokes. If you don't trust the supplier, don't install the app. You can still use the stock keyboard.

I think you should consider an iPhone, Android appears to be to risky for you.

I wasn't looking for opinions on whether I should use it or not, was just wondering if others had any security issues with it.

I did install it, and it's impressive. But I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable logging into online banking/passwords/credit card numbers with with it.

IMO, what this app needs is the ability to switch between the native keyboard and the swiftkey keyboard with a quick swipe/gesture on the keyboard itself. That way I could use swiftkey most of the time, except when using online banking etc, I could just swipe diagonal across the keyboard and it brings back the native keyboard.

Regarding trusting the supplier, how can you make a valid judgement on that if you know very little about them?

If I made a keyboard app that was impressive, would you trust me?

If 100,000 odd people are using it I don't have much of an issue with it.

These apps can be decompiled quite easily which is a weakness and a strength. The strength is that the code can be examined. The weakness is that the code can be modified and published as a new app. But if you get the app from the market and from a reputable vendor and over 100,000 are using it then I'd say it's OK.

It can always have bugs or security holes, but your stock app can have those too.

No. The sdk has proguard obfuscator built in. You can't just decompile modern android apps. The old ones maybe but not anymore.

Why just a keyboard app. You know that it's not just keyboard apps that can read your info. You have to weigh up the permissions required by the app and how reputable the supplier is.

I never install an app from the market that isn't recommended on several sites and that already has several thousand users. That still not foolproof but it'll do me.
