    Hi all,

My friend has been told by their boss the branch they were Manager in is to no longer operate and they need to find a new role for them in Head office. They had another meeting where their boss has told them the only position available is an entry level job they was doing 10 years ago in the company and as a result will now be paying suitable salary of that role.

This is a decrease of 50%!! With a mortgage and kids this is not enough to pay the bills let alone support the family. I am wondering if they can do this?? They has been with the company for 13 years and in management for 10 years.....surely this is not acceptable for an employer to reduce wages so dramatically! They have a 10 year contract from 2003 and there was talk of offering Redundancy but they still have outgoings to pay and is far off retirement.

The company in question has a habit of letting lower level staff go and getting in cheap workforce (sometimes not on the books) and rumors are it's struggling to break even but it's doing this to a worker who has put there all into the company and worked under hard conditions it's very heartbreaking and im wondering if anyone has any advice?

    Thanks.

That sounds like a redundancy situation. The new role is not equivalent and the massive reduction in pay clearly means that the terms are not the same.

Thats redundancy although the company are doing the right thing sby offering them new positions within the company. The company can do it and probably have to so it to survive, their hardly going to keep your frind in a poistion/outlet just to keep them happy while the company goes down the tubes

Sounds like your friend is being pushed out. They can offer him what ever job they want but they can't "Reduce his Pay" if I was in your friends place I would take the job, tell him not to sign anything until he sees a solicitor. He's a Permanent worker so check to see if there is any contract workers, if there is bring that up as well.

they only want to cover thier bums with that job offer. if he accpets it he will not get redundency. if they want to keep him but want him to do the lower level job he should ask for redundency first, then get the lower paying job.

they are trying to cover a huge payment to him by offering him a job in the company. he is entitled to this payment, but should look at his liklyhood of getting a job after, maybe consult with the company if this is a permanent fixture or is it temp, and if so to get it in writing.
