    Hi,
my wife is in a very bad work situation which results in her coming home in tears most days. She is definitely suffering from stress. She wants to quit and go out on sick leave. My question is would she be best to go on sick leave and wait till finding a new job before handing in her notice or should she just quit. If she just quits would she be entitled to support straight away or is there a waiting period. She has worked constantly for the last 10 years and is fully paid up in PRSI (Stamps)She can't take any more of the work pressure but it would be very hard to get a job this side of Christmas. Any suggestions.

If your wife is ill due to stress and is unfit for work then she should go out on sick leave, she will be eligible for illness benefit if she has been paying her PRSI payments and sounds like she is. This will have to be filled in and certified by her Doctor.
If a situation at work is causing your wife so much stress that she is ill, then she should try and approach her employers. A lot of companies have guidelines on how they manage stress in the workplace, though maybe some companies dont. I have attached a couple of documents from the HSA which may be useful for you and your wife to have a look at.
Sometimes work can be a bit stressful and a small amount of stress is actually good to keep people motivated, however depending on whats going on in a company and what kind of relationships people have and even the culture of a company can change a healthy amount of stress to harmful levels that cause illness.

unfortuantly her employers are poor. The previously pushed a manager out with unrealistic demands and the current manager is going in the same direction. My wife now been pushed in the same way. They are currently losing money in an service they have no experience in and are blaming people rather than making changes suggested by staff. I don't think the company will be still open in 12 months time but its still no way to treat staff.

My concern is my wife and like most people in Ireland we can't afford to live on 1 wage but having her come home in tears most days is worse
