My Ubuntu install fails to start some programs.

    Hi People,

So i'm really getting into Ubuntu now and enjoying it. There is one thing really annoying me now.. It's that some programs I install just don't start when called.

I can double click the program then it will say "Opening... <prog_name>" in the taskbar. After a moment this will disappear and nothing will happen.

I can understand the program was installed via a weird process but this has just happened for a program from the Ubuntu repo.. (drivel).

    What gives?

In fact: I've just tried that program on my laptop at it works fine along with the other programs that won't work on my laptop. It looks like my desktop install is buggered.. I wonder is there a way to fix this without re-installing..

NOTE: Both installs are Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) x64.

    Any advice appreciated,

    Cheers.

What program and is there anything about it in the logs?

I had a similar problem with 11.10 on a relatively underpowered atom board. Once I turned off the 3d unity interface and effects and such, everything seemed to work

Try starting it in terminal. Usually it will an error message if it fails to start which should give some clue as to what the problem is or at least it can be used for a google search.

Usually the application name should be enough in terminal to start the program although that might not work for all applications.

Yea, actually I forgot to post that error..

I get "segmentation fault" for "drivel"..

I've googled it.. could it be related to the graphics side of things? That's the only main difference between my desktop and laptop.
