    Hi,
I am planning to join a club for 2012 and from what i can see there are some good deals going, carton has dropped to 2,300, slightly out of price range but tempting, also Rathcore grabs my attention at 850,please post any good deals that you know of, I work shift work so a 4 or 5 day membership might also suit

Has anyone taken up the Carton House offer? Or is anyone a member there?

I'm quite happy with my current club as it is great value for money and a great course. However, that offer in Carton House sounds good. One of the best golf facilities in Ireland. I wouldn't say 2,300 is a steal but it's not a bad offer.

Makes you wonder how certain clubs in Dublin can continue to charge ridiculous 'hello money'.

Some (well one that I know of) have increased their 'hello money' this year.

FFS! The mind boggles. What kind of alternative universe are these guys operating in.

Clubs in good locations near populous areas probably still have high demand and can pick and choose who they let in. I wouldn't blame them for charging it but I might question the sanity of those that actually pay it!

I think the increase in hello money is related to the fact that some clubs know that they are solvent enough to survive the current crisis and they think they are going to benefit from neighbouring clubs going bust.

There are two clubs I know of who are on the point of going under, that will put at around 600 homeless golfers into the market and suddenly theres a demand for membership.

    Location, location, location ....:(

What's the cheapest membership in the country. I heard of a club in Clare charging 160euro for a full handicap. I guess these sort of clubs are helping to bring a lot more people into the game, people can get a handicap and go play in opens around the place for half the price of a green fee. Bandits might be a problem but that's a problem with or without these clubs.

Different strokes for different folks – but every choice has pros & cons.

Some want cheap country membership for handicap to play in opens – but unless you already have a handicap, you have to submit 3 cards in a club that could be a day’s journey away. Also, playing in opens is OK but you don’t become part of a club. Do your sums as it might be cheaper to join a nearby club!

Others are not happy with their own club and are looking around. Choice could be a nearby club with “hello money” or travel a bit further. For example, Bray is about the same distance from Arklow as it is from Donabate, giving lots of choice in terms of total cost (travel, time, subs, etc.) V the overall golf membership package (course quality, facilities, space on timesheet).

It’s complicated – I notice Bray has retained both “hello money” and “social levy” – yet, have closed their bar / restaurant all day on Mondays and Thursdays!

Also, St. Anne's reduced their "hello money", took in too many and now have a crammed weekend timesheet.

Crazy world – so do your homework!:)
