Update manager worked fine for me and was fairly straight forward. No loss of data or apps. How large the download is depends a bit on the packages you have installed.

You can click thorough to start to the update and it will, after a bit of calculation, tell you exactly how much needs to be downloaded -- and you will have the option to cancel if you're unhappy with it.

I just did that on my laptop (which hasn't been updated yet) and it tells me 1,338mb will be downloaded if I go ahead with it.

1,338mb - will crawl on my connection speed. did you find 11.10 noticeably slower than 11.04? seems to be an issue from some people, from posts i have read on ubuntu forum.

Haven't noticed anything slow on my machine... but I've got eight cores and eight gigs of ram, so... :)

If you're looking for something light, Xfce is a good option. Linux Mint is good and has an Xfce release.

Also though, I think the size of the update is dependent on what packages and software you've got installed. Yours might be less than 1,338mb.

Would have been much cooler had it been 1MB smaller.
