got these two mid morning, had a strange thing happen early on where the dogs put up a cock from down a ditch as soon as he cleared the briars he dropped straight down on the ground. turned and faced me and then took off over my head, anyway lets just say he got away. :D
this cock was retreived alive by the pup from some very heavy cover. the bitch made a nice retreive on the rabbit. i wont be hunting them together for the rest of the season as the pup was a bit of a handful today and the work rate of my bitch suffered. anyway im chuffed with the day all round. using road kill pheasants for puppy retreiving during the summer has paid off. saw plenty of birds but only got a shot at these two

Had probably the best days hunting either myself or my father ever had. I shot 4 cocks and my father shot 3. We met 11 in total, but 3 weren't shootable and we missed 1. Our red setter was feckin lethal today she was bang on every bird even when the scents were bad after the frost melted this morning, but she really came into her own in the afternoon once places dried up and there was a bit of a breeze. There were a lot of hens about, way more than other years which is great because it means all the vermin control is paying off.
In the competitions I got second longest bird with 39&15/16" and my father got third longest with 37&1/2". The club treasurer won the longest bird with a monster 42&1/2" long. I also won third longest in another club I'm in with the same bird.

went out yesterday morning, pulled up at the let and went to put on me boots,
feckn left them at home, was fuming didnt know what to do, would of took an hour and a half to get there and back. decided to stroll up the forest road(in me runners) looking down on a clear fell, saw plenty of deer however they were too far away and the terrain wouldnt suit my runners. was keepng an eye on 2 deer grazing up towards me, when a doe and calf appeared to my right about 90 yards away, took the calf first, and waited 5min for the mother to appear. some craic dragging them to the road in my runners, slipping all over the place great morning out, weather was grDSCF0707.JPGeat.

Was out yesterday morning - lovely morning...nicest I can remember for a long time.....great to be out.

I was away for the weekend in Kerry but heard from fellow club members that there were lots of poachers out on land Saturday, Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday.

2 of us met 11 cocks & 4 hens but no luck. Birds were as wary as hell & ran like mad when human spotted. Was using a cocker & birds were definitely runners.....as soon as she'd pick up scent they'd run rather than fly....often running through cover 50 / 70 yards then rising out of range. Got a shot at two...no luck....snap shots as they veered out through trees.

Had intended to go out again this morning on my own but dog not well. She picked up the scent of a pheasant yesterday on opposite side of barbed wire fencing. Couldn't get through and jumped it before I could get to her.....caught her chest in the wire.....a right good gash...not deep but pulled the skin back.

She wasn't in form to go this morning...licking wound & lying down...didn't push it with her. I'll let her recover...hopefully she might be back in form for the weekend.
