Caught speeding in Austria

    Hi All,

Was out on hols in Germany/Austria back in July, and rented a car in Germany and drove it down in to Austria. I just got a letter in the post today (from Austrian cops or something) quoting some laws and they want me to confirm I was driving the car on a certain road at a certain time. It does not mention the offence, and the laws quoted are about rental cars and that they are allowed track the renter to their home address even if outside Austria. I am presuming the offence is speeding, as I was not on a toll road.

Does anyone know what the fines are for speeding over there?
    Can penalty points be transferred?
Is this likely to go away if I just 'forget' to respond?

    Thanks
    Brian

It might, it might not, but if you ever want to go back to Austria ...

If its a small fine I would just pay it. Could you imagine how stressed you would be driving in Austria the next time if you thought there was an outstanding offense on your licence.

    According to what I've found:

    Inside built-up area.
    up to 20km/h over the limit - €30 - €40.
    up to 25km/h over the limit - €50 - €56.
    up to 30km/h over the limit - €56 - €72.
    up to 40km/h over the limit - €70 - €160.
over 40km/h over the limit - from €150 upwards + driving ban for 2 weeks.

    Outside built-up area.
    up to 20km/h over the limit - €29 - €50.
    up to 25km/h over the limit - €50 - €70.
    up to 40km/h over the limit - €140 - €160.
    up to 50km/h over the limit - €150 - €300.
    over 50km/h over the limit - €150 - €2180 + driving ban for 2 weeks.
    Can penalty points be transferred?
    No, they can't.

Yes, it will go away, but it will come back as a boomerang if you even get stopped in Austria again.

Thanks everyone for the replies, im thinking I will just pay up, as I presume its speeding and I wont have been much over the limit. It definitely wasnt a toll as the offense was on a regional road. I will definitely be going out there again and for the sake of 40/50 euro its not worth the hassle it might cause with renting cars etc.

That seems retarded..surely speeding in the built up areas should have the higher penalties?

Can the fine not be paid by the hire company and taken from your credit card under the agreement with the hire company and yourself?

Nah, the fine is the responsibility of the driver. The only obligation on the hire companys behalf is to pass your contact details onto authorities when they come a knocking.

This same thing happened to me when I was on holiday in Australia. Speeding ticket was waiting for me when I got back here! I decided to pay up in case I ever wanted to get back into OZ again.

OP- if you ever plan on spending time in Austria again I would just pay the fine in case you run foul of the authorities over there for whatever reason.
