Is my indoor aerial not compatible with the Saorview box?

I got a bog standard digihome saorview box for 60 euros in Power city at the weekend. I intended to connect my indoor one for all aerial to it to get the saorview channels however when I power it on and have all the connections made i.e scart lead between tv and aerial and the antenna cables form the tv to the box etc and the aerial connection to the box from the aerial, I do not get any menu option displayed on the tv which I should when I power the tv and box on simultaneously to allow me to search and configure the channels and settings etc. The digital receiver I have is an Digihome DI1180 digital tv receiver. Before I connected it I could get RTE 1, 2 and TV3 with the idoor aerial connected to the tv. What could I be doing wrong. When I power on the box on the control panel it has the words IN IT whatever that is. All I get on the tv display is a blue screen and SCART displayed in the top left corner. I beginning to lose patience with it. Could it be a faulty box.

I tried a Digihome a few weeks ago and had trouble with it from the get-go.

It wouldn't recognise when a device was connected via the USB and trying to get it to match up with the TV by the HDMI connection was a mess. Several times I had to switch the TV off and back on when the picture just blanked out for no reason.

I brought it back to Power City and replaced it with a Triax.

I have opened all of the packaging on it etc. Would they still take it back even though it may not be resellable when the box and all its accessories have been unpacked etc. I have the receipt of course

That's not your problem, if you think it's faulty take it back.

Thanks for the advice folks. I will take it back on Saturday. Won't have the chance with work etc to take it back sooner. Is the Triax a better make. I will get one of those if it works better

Very unlikely that the tv is at fault. If it has a scart socket, then it can(should) read the signal regardless of source.

Right folks. I got a new scart lead and made progress in that I get the settings menu option on the tv for the Saor view box. The problem now is that when I do an automatic scan for channels with my one for all indoor aerial connected into the set box the result is that it cannot find any channels. I can get RTE 1,2 AND TV3 when the aerial is plugged directly into the tv. Could it be now that the indoor aerial is not compatible with the Digihome saorview box?, and I will need to purchase a different indoor aerial.

Do you get TG4? What are the analogue UHF channel nos?

Where are you located and do you know your nearest analogue and DTT transmitter?

Normally if you can receive the analogue channels with an indoor aerial you should be able to receive the DTT channels if they come from the same transmitter.

Thanks the cush for the info. Yes I can receive TG4 but I need to adjust the aerials direction to get it and when I get a clear reception with this channel, one of the other channels could be fuzzy such as TV3.

Not all of the 170+ analogue sites carry Saorview DTT you may require an external or loft aerial to receive the DTT channels from another transmitter hence the reason I asked about the analogue frequencies and transmitter.

Should I just hold onto the box due to the aerial being no use when the big switch off takes place in a year. I would be happy to use the indoor aerial for the moment seen as I get 3 channels with it. Or would you suggest that I just invest in a compaible aerial for the saorview box now?

The choice is yours 3 analogue channels vs. 8 DTT channels. In less than 12 months you'll have to upgrade in any case.

Can you identify your nearest analogue and DTT transmitters? Can you post the analogue channels frequencies/channel nos.?

It would help to give you the best answer possible.

I don't know what the signal stregth for Saorview is in Rush but my assumption would be that an external aerial would be required at that distance from Kippure. Group CD external aerial required for Saorview.

Analogue could be from there also or maybe Three Rock, different aerials required.

I am not great at the oul DIY work. Would it be hard setting up this aerial? Also would it be ideal setting it up in the attic rather then outside. i already have an old satelite dish on the roof from being with Sky previously. Also I would think this would be failry flimsy on the roof with our weather.

The aerial is a standard external type and well able to handle the Irish elements.

You could try the indoor aerial in the attic and see how it goes but the slates/tiles can affect the signal strength also. You could also try the external aerial above, there are loft mounting kits available.

If you have to go the external route it might be best to get an installer if you're unsure how to do it.

Can anyone suggest a decent indoor aerial that would work with the saor view box

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,285 ✭✭✭Peter Rhea

The tv broadcast network isn't designed with indoor aerials in mind. Indoor aerials will work in some locations but basically, you just have to get lucky.

Depends on Saorview signal strength and quality where you locate the aerial.

The power city sales assistant appears to have good knowledge of the signal quality inside your house so based on his/her advice I'd go for it ;).
