    Hi,

I would love to get the opportunity to get an insight into a typical day of an occupational therapist as I am considering to apply for the course. Any ideas on going about work experience? Does insurance and confidentality make it difficult to allow me work shadow?or should I just get in touch with the local hospital. I am living in the mayo area . Any help would be greatly appreciated

Contact the Human Resources Department of your local hospital, there will usually be somebody appointed there to take care of those that wish to do work experience (amongst other things of course).

    Good luck to you!

    Hi there,
I'm applying for the msc in occupational therapy and it was required to shadow an OT. It's very difficult to get anywhere. I had to go to dublin (i'm from monaghan) to shadow an OT. St. James hosp allowed me to shadow to OT's, but apart from that I was turned down everywhere else because of confidentiality/insurance.

I'm surprised to hear that folks, most places i've been on placement or shadowed have been fairly happy to have students or those interested in OT to come in for a day or 2. Confidentiality or insurance have never been an issue. There was even a girl who came to shadow for 2 days when i was working on a secure unit.

Have you tried phoning OT departments directly? Try a variety of places as well. like James's is good to see a big hospital, so maybe try a smaller clinic or something. There are probably places more local to you that would be more convenient. Try phoning your local HSE Healtch centre or primary care centre, you could hook up with a community OT to see that side of things.

i know you're applying for the Msc, but if you're having no luck with getting shadowing, try calling the OT department in trinity, theyre pretty helpful, and they might be able to connect you with someone

    good luck!
