    hi all,
i have a beef with the gaa club membership fee at my local club for my little boy who loves hurling , the fee for each juvenile is 80euro , this seems rediculous for an amatuer game , when i questioned it they said 45e was the actual membership and 35euro had to be sent to the gaa executive for insurance, i said " whats the membership for so" they couldnt give me a vaild answer, the thing is i am lucky enough i only have one kid but others have 3 in the club and whoppde do they cap the fee at 260e for multiple kids in a family.

can anyone share my frustration or does anyone know if this 35e for the gaa is true

    Hi Tipper2001,

I can only comment on my own local GAA club. Very small club with maybe 150 members. Fees for my 2 children this year were as follows - €5 for my 6 year old who plays U6 and U8 Hurling and Football and €20 for my 11 year old who plays U12 Hurling and Football. We don't pay any weekly "subs" for training. Total of €25 for the 2 of them for the GAA season. This is the only fee we pay to the club and my children are covered under the club insurance.

€80 per child does sound a lot to be honest.

I can only give my experience for my own club, it's a small-ish club in north dublin, but in a deprived area.

For children it's 25 euro a season, and 2 euro each match. However, this 2 euro is mainly to cover the referee's fee, which is 20 euro from each team a match. The rest of the money is put towards the kid's christmas party.

The insurance isn't far off I'd say to be honest, but the membership fee's are a bit steep I have to say. This money tends to go towards kit for the kids and stuff though.

Juvenile membership in my club is €30 per child.

Insurance per juvenile team is €200 but there is also general club insurance and competition entry fees that have to be taken into account.

    all,

thanks for the replies , looks like its going to have to be another case of typical irishness " put up and shut up " as on my own nothing i can do as its a fairly well off club and membership of over 2000, little me voicing his opinion wont matter , its my little lad that looses out, i dont care but obviously i cant let my opinions ruin his fun.its so frustrating.

    thanks all again.

You should be entitled to get a set of accounts from the club that should show all the income & expenditures that the club had for the year, which is where they should work out the cost of memberships. €45 does sound steep to me for underage members though

    My club it's 30 per child u6-u9, 60 per child u10-u18.

For u10-u18, there's players fees of 30 included.

How long have membership fee's been introduced for? I stopped playing at minor level because of work hours, and this is new to me. I never remember paying a penny.

Our Adult Membership is only £30 and Youth is £10
All players are registered with Croke Park. IIRC the registration fee per player to Croker was something like £3:50
For our female members, who are registered with the LGFA rather than the GAA, it was something like £17.50

We have around 600 members, probably less than half of that playing members.

It takes a hell of a lot to run a club now, so I’m sure your club aren’t intentionally ripping off parents. Although our membership fees are low, we are constantly fundraising for the club and all members are expected to support.
Our club try and place the financial burdens on the older club members, leaving participation as cheap as possible or free for our youth members. We all benefited of this system as kids and now, as adults, its time for us contribute.

Go to your AGM and you’ll see where the money is going

At my local club (St Vincents, Dublin) I used to have a fee of €50 for Juvenile and now I'm currently playing for the Minors so my fee could be around €100 I think plus insurance on top of that.

Fees for underage in my club are 50 for the first child per year. A second child is 40 and any other children are 30.
The fees go towards registration and running of the club. Not sure how much goes straight to croke park.
All the kids get refreshments after training.

Just to fill you in on Insurance costs. Each adult team per club costs €1000 to insure, U21 teams are €450 per team and youth teams are €200 per team to a max of €1200 per club. My own club do not charge any membership to anyone under 18 years of age and our adult membership is €20.

Forgot to mention my club runs a juvenile draw each year to cover the €1200 Insurance costs.
