Hey all, got a call there from a nice lady saying the Dunnes I applied for for Christmas work are holding interviews on Thursday morning. This'll be my first interview, I'm 19 and in 3rd year in college.

I'm probably going to be a good bit nervous, but besides trying to be calm, speak up and make eye contact have you any general interview tips, and maybe even more specific ones on what they tend to ask in Dunnes interviews?

i did the same interview 3 years ago, and got the job,

asked about previous experience, what would my previous employer describe me as? iv done my fair share of interviews lately and its nothing to get too nervous bout, theyl just wanna try to figure out if your gunna steal from the tills, or fight with other staff/ customers. so just have a few lines rhymed off like

id be good at stacking shelves because...
    cleaning up because...
id be good on tills because...
im good with people. i have displayed this at ... Soccer/ college/ teamwork etc.

    good luck with the job!

I've had two Dunnes interviews, no questions in the second one though.

The first one asked 'describe a time when you received good customer service' and not a whole lot else that I can recall. To be honest, they'll be far more interested in how many lates (closing shifts) they can get out of you. Customer service is NOT a priority, the most important thing is to come across enthusiastic and a good people person. I have seen people being hired with almost zero english and others with bad attitudes who walk out of the job within a week, so it's not a tough selection process. The problem will be there's more competition with people who have retail experience, but this won't matter near as much for a christmas contract than it would for a normal temp contract. The interview is unlikely to last more than 3 minutes, they'll have a good few to get through, so make sure you use your time well. I've never heard of 'why do you want to work for dunnes' being asked, but no harm to prepare it and know a bit about the company.

No need to go overly formal, nice blouse and skirt/trousers will be fine, or shirt and trousers if you're a guy. Don't suit up.

Great thanks, girl in our house dropped in CV's from everyone in the house (all 5 of us) and from what I know everyone got a call :P

I don't really have previous experience so I'll think about those questions beforehand.

..should I bring a copy of my CV with me in-case they don't have mine on hand/

    Basic stuff.

    1. Give an example when you worked as part of a team?
    2. Give an example of a time you were under pressure and how you handled the situation?
    3. Give an example of a goal you have set yourself in the past an achieved?
    4. How would you handle and irritate customer ?
    5. How would you rate your time handling on a scale of 1-10 is there anything you might do if you were running late?
    6. How flexible are you too work for us?
    7. What experience would you have to bring with working with us ?
    8. Where would you like to see yourself in a years time?
    9. Give an example were you have worked on your own initiative ?
    10. Give me a memorable moment from your time in secondary school?

Oh and best of luck !

    Great thanks Msg :D

I was talking to a cousin who's working in Dunnes in Galway and she said it's basic enough, with questions quite similar to the ones you mentioned there.

Just back now, it went pretty well for my first one.

Got asked to talk about myself, what would I do if a customer came complaining about an out-of-date product and then what I did in my previous job.

Won't know until next week if I'm in or not. :)

They are actually pretty quick, mine were both within 2 days.

That sounds like grocery! No out-of-dates products in drapery. Not a tough question anyway- something like assure the customer they can get a refund, inform a manager blah blah get it taken off the floor.

Hey OP, when did you apply for this job? I went into Dunnes a while back but they said they weren't taking on any staff for a while. Is it worth dropping back in to see if I can get some Christmas work?

The woman I had for the interview said she's doing them now, going on holidays for a week, then doing the hiring when she's back.

Off the top of my head I said I'd let them know I understood their frustrations, apologise and point them to customer service, then make sure there was no other out of date stuff left. She then said very good, but always make it known to a manger.

One of the managers is a friend of a housemate, she left them in around the 20th Oct, I got a call on Tuesday. I applied in Sligo, give them a call and see what's the story, you've nothing to lose I bet.

Its very basic stuff really; in most cases if you're getting called for an interview for a retail job you more or less have it.

Yea that's what a few friends were saying. I did the interview on Thursday thought it was grand, won't know until next week whether they want me or not.

Got a call there, want me for an induction tomorrow, thought I didn't get it seeing it was so late in the week :p

They said to bring photo id, is that just passport photo alone or an age/student card?

When I asked she said there was no uniform to wear, mates are saying to wear shirt/pants nonetheless. Are shirts/pants overkill at an induction?

They need your passport, it has to be your passport. It gets photocopied for your file. I wore work trousers and a black top (girl) but that's because they asked me if I'd work after it and I already had 3 years in another Dunnes..you can wear whatever though, there's no dress code at them and you probably won't be staying after it.

It will be at least 4 hours long, probably more..they're always inventing new policies to sign. Two horrendous videos to sit through as well.

I don't have my passport with me, I'll bring a student card/garda card, I only got the call at 6pm today for 11am tomorrow so there's no way of going home/back up in the mean time.

    I think I'll just wear Shirt/jeans/brown shoes so it's a bit in between :)

She told me it would be 11-2am so nothing major, thanks Corruptedmorals :D
