Running out of breath...reason for?

Decided to hit the Hell Fire Club this afternoon cause I haven't been up there in yonks. Headed up the vertical path no problem, made it to the club without stopping which shows i haven't lost much of my fitness. But then, my throat started burning and I was a good ten minutes recovering before I could move again.
Now I haven't done much hill running in the last year, and have been out for the last month really resting an injury, so what is it that took my breath away? Is it going out with far too much intensity straight away without an adequate warm up? Last time it happened was during the summer at a 1 mile race when I bolted out of the blocks and sprinted for the whole mile. Could barely talk for an hour after.
Not looking for medical advice, just wondering what causes it, and what I can do to stop it happening again. ( More regular hillrunning I assume!)

Your answer is in your question! If you haven't run for a month you will have lost a relatively significant amount of fitness. So, although you're doing a run that you've done before it's taking you an awful lot more effort to complete which is why you're in bits after it. Slow down a bit and build back up. The good news is that your fitness will come back quickly.

Estimate here that no running for 14-30 days may mean a 12% reduction in Vo2max, so that would explain things.

By vo2Max do you mean my lung strength? When I got to the top of the hill, my legs were fine, I could have run a marathon, but it's more the harsh stinging sensation at the back of the throat, and the complete breathless that I felt that I'm interested in learning more about. I'm not asthmatic or anything. Was shocked that it took me a full ten minutes to recover.

I did go from 60+km a week to zero for nearly 4 weeks, so I'v no doubt I've lost a lot of fitness. Though I thought it might be my legs that would suffer not my lungs.

In pretty basic terms, yes. Or aerobic capacity. Another few runs up to the HFC should fix that, plus any leg strength you may have lost :)
