Stolen MX5, casting the net as best I can

    Hi folks,

Just casting the net as far as I can here for the search for my MX5.

My Mk2.5 MX5 was stolen on Sunday the 30th/Monday Morning the 31st of October in Rathmines. Only had it 4 months and had already spent a bit of cash getting the brakes done and buying a hard top. Gutted to say the least.

I thought i'd post it here in case someone who's on the lookout to buy one or deals in MX5's comes across it. The car is quite distinctive, first it's a Japanese import so it's a Mazda Roadster and is badged as such. It's black with nice sporty alloys (trying to hunt the make down) it has a black hard top roof (as well as soft top). It also has a chrome petrol cap cover.

It's in good nick, no major scratches or anything but the front bumper was resealed (before I bought it) from a crack (likely a curb or speed bump). It also has the pretend mech covers instead of the fog lamps in the front.

It's a 2001 model, not sure about posting reg here or if that's wise. I've reported it to garda and rang the major ports to ask them to keep an eye out. Checking all the usual sites by the hour as well. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone is looking at buying one of these amazing cars, please do keep an eye out.

    Thanks!

TBH, its the type that is stolen to rag it out and burn it. I wouldnt expect it to have been stolen for sale or parts.

    Sorry to hear mate.

Cheers man. Garda think it was likely stolen to be either stripped down or put on a boat or sent up north to be sold on. No sign of a careless joyrider, no broken glass etc. But tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if it is found burnt out somewhere.

No alarm, the gardai think the locks were more than likely popped. I've no decent picture (trying to hunt down the original carzone snaps) but the reg is 01 WH 4996.

Looks very much like this http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mazda/MX-5/1.6-TAX-/201136204308713/advert?channel=CARS except with different alloys. Trying to track down exact make of them, they came with the car.

Only difference is a hard top with a slight scratch in the middle of it and aforementioned chrome cover for the petrol tank cover.

    Thanks guys!

I'd start with guy you bought it from?
who was he, Irish? or Foreigner?
How many keys did you get with it ? one or two,?

Some guys sell cars cheap, keep one key, rob it back few months later to strip it,

I can't see his nationality being remotely relevant.

Tbh, that did cross my mind but I bought it from a car dealership in Kildare that's been there for about 5-10 years.

Not to take this off-topic, but I'm guessing a different alarm system would scupper the seller if they tried to take the car back?

OP, I'm gutted for you - it's a big fear for a lot of posters on here, I think, so I hope you either get the car back or at least get closure of some sort :(

I was only discussing the amount of cars being nicked lately on the dyno day!

as a remote chance, take a look down at the eastern lower dodder road (opposite the mini 'Arc de Triumph' feature).
i was driving past there this evening and noticed a 'similar' car parked stupidly on the footpath on a bend in the road.
I struck my attention for being black with a soft roof. As i was driving trying to avoid hitting off it, I didn't seek the car make.
worth a chance and apologies if its not it.

Thanks for the replies folks. Car was found, unfortunately not in the state I would have liked it to be found in. The Gardai called this morning to inform me it was found burnt out in Ballyfermot.

For anyone living in the Rathmines/Ranelagh area, according to the Garda I was speaking to a large number of cars from the area are being stolen for joyrides in the north and west of the city. Mostly 10 year old cars with no immobiliser or alarm ranging from everything from a polo to MX5 to whatever else they can get their hands on.

Thanks again for the replies, much appreciated!

Stoplock Pro should be used by folks on such cars, I used to have one on the Celica and the Prelude.

Sorry to hear OP, but often it's the best result after a car being taken. Good time of the year to be buying a replacement though, best of luck.

That sucks balls. Sorry to hear that man.

One question though, are you able to recover the alloys? They'd survive the fire. Not that that's much, but it's something.

I have, and the alloys were actually alright on it. I was considering taking them since the car was left there for 3 days. I didn't in the end.

Gone in 60 seconds....well less then that I can verify first hand I had pulled one out of the girlfriends car when she lost her keys in less then a minute with my bare hands...I was quite shocked how easy it was to be honest..

Auto express had a similar experience:

Now the fun with the insurance company, Dublin City Council took the remains of the car to a disposal centre and disposed of it. They and the Garda are happy to say it was my car, but the insurance company are being a whole pile of PIA about it... *sigh*

Sorry to hear this OP. My first car was burnt out by some little scroats back in 98. It's not a pleasant experience.

On the plus side, it's time for some car shopping.;)

This is true, and I intend to spend that little bit more for 'comforts' this time :)

Mind you, we only bought this car four months ago after a few months of will we/won't we on a fun two seater.

Unfortunate to hear what happened, an older car like that it would be expected to be ragged and burnt out unfortunately. If you buy another older mx5 etc get yourself a big motorcycle chain and padlock and wrap it round the steering wheel. Thats what I use to do years back on old jap Hondas with no immobilsers on them.

I would not really bother with a stop lock type mechanism, I have used them and their not great IMO.

^ Agreed....A well hidden kill switch on the fuel pump or starter motor should prove troublesome to even the most determined nack bag.

If the op was to get a kill switch, Where would you put a well hidden kill switch? People seem to put them in obvious places like under the dash where it's the first place a thief would check.

Lots of places...inside the gear stick gaiter, get a factory switch and add to a blank somewhere....lots of different places to bury one.

Sucks op, hope you get closure. What good or pride can someone have in a car they didn't earn.

With your bare hands you pulled one out?
Because auto express had to make lots of noise and have also mentioned they attacked the actual steering wheel.

As a fellow mx5 owner I feel very sorry for you m8. By the looks of it, you did not even had enough time to enjoy it :(.

I bet those little ****s read these forums and very proud of it. If I get my hands on one of them, then ringing Garda will be the last thing I do.

Thanks for replies guys. Insurance company still being a stickler about it, but I doubt it'll be a major problem.

Replacement car in place with alarm, immobiliser and two massive motorcycle chains in place. Snipers trained on car too :)
