Just checked my car for oil, and found the dreadded mayonnaise under the cap.

Can't have been problematic for more than a few weeks as check and service periodically.

    Golf iv, 1.6 petrol
Anyone know how long abouts, till the gasket craps out propper style? Also the cost of replacement?

Might not be head gasket, if the coolant level hasn't dropped and the oil on the dispstick is fine is may well not be.

Hard to tell exactly but I think the coolant is down a bit. Dip stick is clear for the moment

Well if the coolant is mixing with the oil than it's best to get it seen to now before the "gasket craps out propper style", as you'll eliminate potential for overheating etc.

Yeah I know, but I've never had a head gasket fail before and I was wondering do I have 5 miles or 5000 miles to get to a garage

If it's been used for short journeys it may just be condensation - it happens.

I'd take RJ's advice and get it seen to immediately.

coolant would be down and oil level possibly up. Sounds like it may be condebnsatioon as said without other symptoms.

They all do that at this time of year. It is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

Thanks guys. I hope its nothing to worry about. I gave the cap a clean off so I could check for new buildup later and I noticed the seal on the cap is kinda perished. Might be wet air getting in that way.
    hopefully anyway

It's when you start getting hollandaise under the filler cap that you really need to worry. Bearnaise sauce means the engine is seconds away from melting through the tarmac.
