Golf club membership west of Cork city

    Hi folks,

Looking to join a club in the coming weeks, finally think I'll make use of it. Macroom would be my local club but I detest the front nine there, we often play the back nine for a tenner if we have a spare few hours but no way would I join it. Played Blarney golf resort this morning and despite the weather I enjoyed it, very playable for a hacker like me, savage clubhouse/changing rooms. They're advertising a deal there for E100/month by direct debit which includes leisure centre membership.

I'm very tempted by this offer but just said I'd throw it out there in case there were better deals out there that I haven't heard of. I live near Lissarda and would be willing to travel up to 30 mins to a club.

    Any other suggestions?

I've played Bandon 4 or 5 times and found it to be a decent track. Great par 3 finishing hole around 170 yards over water. Cant see any membership info on their website but you could ring them.

No it doesn't. Ringenane is now a separate club. For members of Ringenane who transferred to Farrangalway, they still have dual playing rights but new entrants do not have membership in Ringenane by default.

Bailey, super info there, saved me a lot of hassle!

Looks like Muskerry is definitely out due to price. For me costwise, it looks like Blarney, Bandon or Lee Valley. Bantry is supposed to be a lovely course but its a bit too far probably.

Lee Valley is probably the nearest, I've played it a few times in years gone by and thought it a little over-hyped, will play it once or twice in the coming weeks to see if my attitude would change. Do they do a monthly direct debit option does anyone know?

I played Blarney again this afternoon, bit of an eye-opener weatherwise. It was breezy at worst down at 'ground level' but up there it was blowing a gale, a real card-wrecker of a wind. If its a very windy course I'd think twice about joining there. I know we're into winter now but its something I'd take into account especially given the year we've had.

Will also try to get to Bandon for a round or two shortly and will try to make up my mind from there then.

Thanks for all the info so far, any more input would be gratefully received.

I'm a member in blarney. The wind is a big factor alright, can be severe at times

Blarney is a wild spot at times
Why not join the closest or a close course you can always change next year
The closer the course the more you'll tend to play

douglas don't need new members, they still have that developers 5 million sitting in the bank sure!!!

Fota, they are in dream land, I reckon if u offered them 5k they'd take it. It will never come way down in price tho cause its the best course in Cork, not that they have much competition. In fairness, compared to other counties, Cork has the poorest standard of courses in my opinion.

Would have played all the courses you are lookin at and would recomend Lee Valley. Bandon is nice as well and was thinking about joining it myself. How receptive are they to new members in bandon.

Member also in Blarney - windy obviously given the height above sea level but surely golf should be challenging.
To me, I feel if I am playing well in Blarney then it stands to me when play easier courses like Fota and Capella etc that are more open.
Blarney will always find out your true handicap.
The membership in Blarney are sound and no problem with room on the timesheets.
Savage value at €100 pm and getting €20 back in vouchers for the bar/food as well as complimentary leisure centre membership.
Why not give it a try!

I know what youre saying knucklefader, I tried telling myself that I shouldnt be afraid of the wind. But, I'm a hacker, regularly getting soundly beaten by 18-handicappers. I'm improving slowly however and am beginning to enjoy it more as a result. I feel that if I', constantly battling the elements along with my own shortcomings I could quickly become pi**ed off with the game. 12 months of a more playable course might improve me to the extent where I'd relish the challenge of battling a course combined with tough conditions.

    Hope that makes sense!!
