Well myself and Drummerboy08 bought an EG Civic hatch. This Civic is quite famous, it's the one that was used by MidnightEG to 'egg on the punters'

It's currently got a 1.3 carb engine inside but that'll be changing very very soon ;) It will have a vtec roar in the near future.

We stripped it out today, the dash still needs to come out though.

Initially we bought this car with the intention of throwing in a vtec engine some brakes (maybe) and a cage for trackdays. Those plans have changed a little now. This *may* make an appearance in the ITCC.

We're going for a B16a engine (Civic SiR engine) with cams, Neptune Demon ECU (I'll be tuning that myself :o) It will have a host of other bolt ons and handling mods. TypeR brakes will be a must too with racing pads and discs. If it does make an appearance in the ITCC it will be Drummerboy08 doing the driving. We'll have more pics tomorrow ;)

Just to point out, the car has been named "Nicola" in honour of her previous owner.....:pac:

It's also very famous because it's the ultra-rare Lightweight racing Skoda VRs Edition. Most people are not aware of this model because there were so few ever built, we are lucky to have this piece of motoring history with us.

On a more serious note, I just want to say thanks to the lads in Urban Performance who are helping me make a childhood dream come true! Since a very young age I've wanted to build something like this and experience it. No better guys out there who i'd let near a car like this.

As for the ITCC, we'll have to see about that........:o

Best of luck with this lads.

We're ploughing away at the engine today. All we're really waiting on is the hubs. Limerick man has them sorted for us though :)

Well wear, may you burn rubber and scream around the track.

Please stick a good alarm on this and a tracking device, its been

scaring the amount of nice cars disappearing.

Right so, as mentioned above we started work on the engine today, we're still in two minds over what to do about cams I'm thinking we might just run Integra typeR cams for now to see how healthy the bottom end is, considering most of it is being built from bits we have on the shelf. The Buddyclub cams won't run if compression is down.

So parts needed for the conversion are:

    Engine...........have
Gearbox............have an ITR one with an LSD
    Drives...........have
    Fuel Tank..........have
    ECU..........have
Loom......have one in need of repair
    mounts.......have

Other bits needed for the car are

    coilovers.......have
hubs and calipers.......sorted, need to collect
    rear lower control arms...........have
    camber arms front and rear.........need
    wheels.........have
    seat............have
    harness......have
    airbox...........have
exhaust manifold.........have a good one in need of repair
cage..........have front half, we need the rear half. Nothing sorted on this
clutch.....have an excedy stage 2 and Integra TypeR flywheel
clocks.......dumping them and going with TunerviewII, a digital screen, have
    gear shifter..........have
    steering wheel........need
    lexan windows.......need
    Brake lines......need

After that we're onto consumables, tyres, pads, discs, etc etc etc

The engine we're using is a bit of a Frankenstein it's a B16a2 bottom end with an older b16a head, it will be running Integra TypeR cams with dual valve springs. We're going to refresh the head and leave the bottom end alone, too much money in building a bottom end for this car as we're trying to do it on a budget. A lot of the parts being used are throwaways from my Integra, the Integra is being built to a super high standard so some parts aren't needed :)

Anybody wants to have a nosey you're more than welcome to come look or ask questions here :D

Jaysus gary you lads are well on the way. When I heard you were doing it I thought it would last for a week or two and you'd get sick of it but this is looking like a solid project with all the parts listed above. Impressive :)
Do you mind me asking what kind of budget the two of you set aside for it...initial car price included?
What the story with rob doing the driving? I presume he'll need a track licence to get in to the itcc?
BTW I like the VRs model, much rarer and faster than the original vRS model ;)
I hear they did this by removing the MASSIVE boot though :)

This little project actually started from a mad idea I had one evening in the garage, I didn't really put too much thought into it until the car actually arrived on Friday night!!

We both need to get our race licence in order, something we're planning on doing early 2012 once the car is built.

Thanks for dropping over today too!

We had some other suggestions, but they aren't really too PC for around here....;)

Valves got seated today, hopefully we'll have the engine assembled in the next few weeks depending on the spare time we get. Should have some pics up later.

The car will either be ripped around a track or tucked away in the corner of a workshop somewhere so the car will be safe enough when not in use.

    Thanks for the good wishes!

I took a few pictures while up there earlier, just to get a few pre shots.
I upload them later but here's our favourite so far....

Didn't have time to get anything done with the car today, we had too much on including a DPF delete on an Audi A5 that has 15000kms

All of the valves are reseated so tomorrow I'll be popping in the ITR valve springs and popping the head onto the block. If there's enough time I'll throw the cams in and the timing belt on too. After that it's just bolt up the clutch/gearbox and it's ready to drop into place. I want to have the new engine completely ready including wiring and the drives etc so the swop can be done as quickly as possible. I have a very understanding boss but I don't want to take the piss and tie up a ramp :o

I haven't told Drummerboy yet but we'll probably try do that on a Sunday, if not this Sunday then the following one :pac:

Once the engine is in, wired, plumbed and running the rest can be chipped away at handily enough and it's kinda important that the car is kept rolling for the sake of space in the garage. We have 3 race cars over there now lol

The block we are using is a bit of an unknown quantity, but having looked at it there's no oil around the edge of the pistons and only a little in the middle which came from the head. Also ken remembers now where the block came from and says it was a good engine :) The valve oil seals were replaced in the head we are using today and it just needs bolting down now (arp bolts ftw) so more work tomorrow

We've also got our hands on the ITCC regulations for 2012, so there are one or two things that need to be done to keep in line with them.

We might as well go down this road even if we decide not to race it this year, I've also been looking at how I can buy some slicks without upsetting my bank manager....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

Got a good bit done today, flywheel and clutch on, gearbox on, valves, springs and retainers in, head torqued down and cams in.

    Starting to come together :)

Just a quick update on this.

We've been trying to source a wiring loom for the dash for the last few weeks. We've found one now, so happy times!

The engine is also more or less ready to be dropped in bar a few minor details, so it's getting close now!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

Well the wiring loom arrived yesterday, lads were looking for silly money for just the dash loom. I managed to swop one for the carpet from my Teg, happy days.

We've done bugger all else bar finish the engine, it's sitting on the floor now but there's a trackday next Saturday and I got a notion that it'ss be in a fit state to take part, the bossman thinks I'm nuts to be even considering it but sure where's the fun in giving up now :D

    So to do this week

    Old engine out
    Old wiring loom out
    Engine/box in
    Drives in
    Hub conversion
    Gear linkage
    Wiring loom in
    Old fuel tank out
    New tank in
    Tuning
    Seat(s) in
    Harness in
    Old suspension out
    Coilovers in

So not too much... oh and we can only work on it after hours because the garage is fairly booked up this week

I'm glad to see my car is finally getting the engine it deserves! Well done on the progress so far, and best of luck with it in ITCC!

    Sorry who's car?

Coilovers have been dug out and cleaned and the car is nearly on the ramp, just have to shift a stricken Golf GTI first

    Vtec engine in place.

We have the wiring loom all laid out and ready to go, the fuel tank is out to be replaced with a new one. The coilovers are all in, hubs are converted. Still a lot to be done but being honest I'm happy with how things have gone this week and we are slightly ahead of schedule. Today will be another long day though. It was midnight the last 2 nights when we went home and today will be no different. I'll probably die of exhaustion halfway through turn 1
