Are you looking for industry experience or research experience.

There are a lot of professors who would take project students.
Try within your college, find one of your professors who's works interests you and ask to meet him with regard to a possible summer project.

For industry, i know people who have done work experience in labs before they graduate. I dont know the best way to apply, either ring and ask for the contact details for a manager in lets say the qc department. then go ahead and contact them.

The head of your course would be a great place to start, he will know the profs and might know some people in industry. just meet with him and tell him you are really interested to do some relevent summer work/internship. Not the bog standard spar stuff. He will like that you are showing an interest

It also looks great on the CV
