Reports that Antonio Cassano suffered a stroke yesterday.

The ANSA news agency reported passengers saw Cassano joking with team-mates, before suddenly developing problems with his vision, speech and movement.

He is only 29yrs old, seems to be around a long time. Hopefully he makes a full recovery and gets back playing.

The report I read suggested they weren't sure what happened him? Though the symptoms do seem consistent with a stroke. Hopefully he recovers fully.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I was reading it earlier and my first thought was he has suffered a stroke.

    Inaccurate tittle is inaccurate.

    Milan press release
Milan have reassured anxious fans that Antonio Cassano is on the road to recovery after being struck by a mystery illness.

Cassano has been hospitalised after he started to feel unwell on the flight home to Milan after Saturday’s 3-2 win at former club Roma.

The Italian international is understood to have encountered speech problems on the plane, as well as difficulty in moving.

The 29-year-old has and will continue to undergo tests in a Milan clinic, but the Rossoneri are confident that the player is doing well.

“I spoke to Cassano five minutes ago and he was in a good mood,” Vice-President Adriano Galliani told Sky Sport Italia. “He seems calm.

“Cassano is strong and will certainly recover. The whole squad is supporting him.”

Galliani, though, refused to go into too much detail regarding what has actually happened to the former Sampdoria player.

“Every patient has a right to privacy and this is the case for Antonio too,” Galliani continued in the interview.

“There are doctors there and they are looking after him. I can’t give a diagnosis.

“I don’t know how long it will take for him to return. I’m not a medic, that is not my profession. He’s being looked after.”

Himself nor Milan have mentioned stroke, it's just idle chat at this stage.

Just glad he is calm and feeling well.

Even if it is a stroke, people have recovered, athletes have recovered, Sol Davis being a prime example, Tedy Bruschi being another.

I myself suffered a stroke just over two years ago (at the age of 25).

Strokes don't only happen to unhealthy people, a blood clot can form for a million different reasons and it only takes a bit of bad luck for it to get to the brain, lodge and eventually block blood flow.

Italian press agency ANSA are saying it was a stroke. Either way, I wish him a speedy recovery. Cassano made mental-but-brilliant talent cool back when Balotelli was still in short trousers.

I also heard something about Gattuso going blind in one eye????

Gattauso is having problems with double vision and won't play again this side of new years, maybe not again this season.

It's been confirmed that he has no vision (or close to no vision) in his left eye, I'm not sure if it's permanent or not, surely his career would be finished if it doesn't return.

Gattuaos is suffering from Diplopia, caused from by Sixth Nerve Palsy.

It's odd, because that is one of the symptoms I suffered from after my stroke.

Gattauso has full vision, his eyes are fine, the problem is behind the eye, possibly pressure within the brain or an infection affecting the nerve in question, I don't know, it hasn't been stated by himself or the club.

Paul Scholes recovered from a similar eye problem and was arguably a better player when he returned.

Hope both of them make a full recovery.

Wishing Cassano a speedy recovery, he has been blowing hot and cold so far this season for Milan but when on form is probably the best out and out striker in Serie A.

Seeing as he's Italian, it's probably just heartburn.

    Seriously though: get well soon

Nov 2 (Reuters) - Italy and AC Milan forward Antonio Cassano will be out for a "few months" and needs heart surgery after falling ill at the weekend, the Serie A side said in a statement on Wednesday.
"The player will undergo a small surgical cardiological intervention in the coming days and the recovery time will be better defined after the surgery, but it will probably be a few months," the statement said, adding that no lasting brain damage had been caused by his ill-health.

    A.C. Milan Official Statement

Antonio Cassano has experienced ischemic cerebral damage. The player will undergo surgery in the next few days and is expected to be out of action for the next few months.

MILAN - AC Milan, according to medical reports of the Policlinico in Milan, have said that Antonio Cassano has experienced ischemic cerebral damage. The instrumental and neuroradiological examinations required 72 hours for their course and have highlighted the problem in the circumscribed area of the brain that did not result in persistent neurological deficits. The cause was identified as the presence of a patent foramen ovale septal heart, detectable only with sophisticated specialized investigations. The timing of therapy established has allowed a rapid recovery and improvement of clinical conditions that are good.

In the coming days the player will undergo a small surgical interventional cardiology (closure of the foramen ovale), the recovery time for return to playing will be better defined after the surgery, but probably will be a few months.

AC Milan gratefully acknowledges the facilities of the Polyclinic of Milan for what they are doing with great promptness and professionalism.

Basically, there is a small hole in your heart called a Foramen Ovale.
YOu use it while in the womb to reviece blood directly from the mother to your heart (as babies don't use their own lunges for oxygen enrichment, obviously), normally this hole closes at birth but can, in rare cases stay open.
Cassano's is open, this resulted in a temporary restriction of blood flow which caused an ischemic episode (lack of oxygen delivery to the brain).
This is what cause the speech and movement problems.

Ischemia is very like a stroke symptom wise but has entirely different causes (which can be numerous).

Thankfully, in this cause, treatment is straightforward and pretty quick to recover from, with any luck he will be back before the end of the season, just on time to play in the CL final :P

Meh, he probably took enough cocaine to kill a small horse and they've found some obscure malady to explain it away.

    He's a legend regardless!

Good thing they found it now instead of when it could have caused more serious damage.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test
