St Irenaeus who had been a student of Polycarp and had been brought up in a Christian family is one the very earliest Church Fathers who's writing survives. While the book is primarily meant to be a refutation of the Gnostic heresies it also contains explanations of much orthodox dogma. His truelly cosmic vision is awe inspiring.

He was later to be martyred along with several others in Lyons in France for the Faith.

Just now down-loaded it. Thanks! It will keep me company on my nightly drives with the mail. Just finished Josephus's Wars of the Jews. Fascinating.

Not that I only use the heavier stuff. Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series is a favourite. Full of gentleness, good humour and sharp observation.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
