How much is a used Ford Fiesta Engine?

My Ford Fiesta got flooded last Monday. The engine is completely gone.

I really like that car although it's already 12 years old. It is a good car and I got it in a bargain price. My garage also suggested to just change the engine as it's a good clean car.

He said he can get a used engine for about 450 euros. He said it's a used engine but the mileage is low. I think it's reasonable and indeed I was so grateful to his help during the difficult time. But my friend told me that I've got rif off.

    Have I?

If the car internally has been flooded and the engine destroyed I would forget about getting a new engine, the car will never be the same again.

It isn't worth it on a 99 Fiesta really as stated. But to answer your question anyway. The answer is it depends which engine it is. The 1.3 engines could be got for very small money (€200 or so) but the 1.25 16v will make a bit more. Assuming it is a 1.25 because I can't imagine anyone being sufficiently attached to a 1.3 to want to save it! :P €450 is about the top end of what a 1.25 engine is worth, it is likely the garage is buying it for €300-350 and adding a bit on top to come up with the price to you. They have to do this to cover the hassle of sourcing it and taking the risk that it is no good when fitted. If you buy an engine yourself you might get it cheaper but then you take on the hassle and risk.

    Presuming, Its a 1.25 Zetec... About €200ish

If its just the engine, it might be worth it although check labour rates first to see what it will cost (Possibly cheaper just buy another car)

If it was flooded inside, carpet, seats etc... It's only fit for scrap, as it will never be the same.

€450 is a complete rip off just for an engine TBH, I got a 1.4 Zetec in from the Uk for €250 and had the car driving again after a days work.

If thatprice includes labour then nothing wrong with that.

    +1

On the other hand, if it's just for the engine, he's clearly making a few bob out of you.

Is he not entitled to make a few quid? Surely that is the whole point of him being in business after all ;)

Absolutely, I'd do the very same.

They are available cheap but no garage in their right mind is going to source an engine from the UK and then sell it out at cost. What if something goes wrong and it needs to be taken out again and sent back? That is why you have to add on a few quid to make it worth while. Also €250 to cover labour to change the engine, road test and checks and also the cost of the new fluids and other parts needed is seriously optimistic.

Speaking from experience, I bought a 1.4 Zetec in the UK €250ish delievered....
I pushed the car into a mates garage with lift access, 2 mates a days labour €350 all in drove car back out that night.

Now I understand, labour will be more expensive, personnely unless the OP is mechanically minded, he should take any worthwhile parts, lights, alloys, bonnet, boot etc off.. and weigh it in. Sell bits and buy another Fiesta for a couple hundred more.

Without a doubt that is what the OP should do.

But now you have gone from saying €450 inc labour is a realistic price to saying that the job cost you €600 paying mates rates. I am just trying to add a bit of realism to this situation. I reckon €350 for labour plus the cost of parts would be a fair price. Exact parts needed will vary but could easily run to €200 between oil, filters, plugs, coolant, power steering fluid, maybe a timing belt kit etc.

Sorry should have been more clearer, the complete job including engine, service etc... Cost me €350.

Ok apologies. You didn't pay any labour in that case. So not comparing like with like at all.

€150 is what you can pick one up from, budget about €200 onwards for the engine and about that again to get a garage to put it in :) I conveniently have such an engine lying here doing nothing...

Sadly its stuffed as a buyer found out to both his cost and mine

    tks guys for the reply.

i was asking only about the cost. well my garage said the cost of the engine was around 400-500. and he would not charge me for the labour cost as it's a 'friendly offer' of him...

well, i dont mind he charged me for the labour cost seriously because he needs to live and he has a family to feed. but i would prefer he be honest to me and tell me the real cost of the engine and the real cost of the labour.

    cheers!

btw, my fiesta is 2000, and i really like it. the garage said it's a nice little car and i got it at very nice price. if it's safe to drive after changing the engine and can last for a good few years, i think it's alright.

Glad you got sorted that roughly what an engine and cost to fit is. At hat price it must be a cracker of an engine :)

It was pretty clear to anyone reading it while not trying to look for an argument already. You said it clearly enough when you said "€350 all in"

people just love to pick faults with things then they end up bein wrong :P:D
