Hi about 15 years ago i bought Michael Collins and the making of a new ireland vols 1 and 2 at a book fair. The books have a green cover with what looks like a beige and black leather spine with the title in gold gilt printed on the top half and piaras beaslai on the bottom half. The covers which are green do not have anything on them unlike other editions that have a small pic of Collins on the front. My books have the following on the inside page, published 1926 by George Harrap & Co. ltd and at the bottom of the same page printed in ireland at the talbot press dublin.Could someone please let me know if there are first editions, they are in good condition with no damage to the binding.

hi zimmerframe, noticed your advert on the books titled micheal collins and the making of a new ireland you said you picked them up in a market or something, have you still got them or did you sell them, did you get them valued. what you picked up from my reasearch is a first edition first impression of the book as its published by harrap. 1926 if it had have been published by the phoenic company it would be a second edition still very rare and valuble. let me know if you have still got the set and what price you were told they were worth if you have got them valued??

I still have them and they apparently are first editions,i bought them for 150 pounds at a book fair in the Glentworth hotel Limerick just because i liked them.I have never had them valued, however i think they may have been re-bound.They are in excellent condition with the usual marks of age (foxing?)on the first few pages and nothing much after that.Because of the absence of a head of Collins on the cover, which is green with an embossed decoration about a quarter of an inch wide running from top to bottom about 1 and a half inches in from the spine, the spine is brown leather like material with the title the author on two black sections in gold lettering and the figure 1 and 2 as appropriate. The inside cover and one blank page in each volume is yellowish like the rest of the pages but seem to be newer than the rest and thats why i think the bindings are new which is odd given the excellent condition of the pages at the start of the books.Sorry for longwinded description,i have not yet learned to post pics but i am hoping to learn soon.

hi zimmerframe or zimmermania even but thought that zimmerframe was funnylol. no thats exactly what i wanted i long description of what you have in your posession, and by the sounds of things you might have either an extreamly rare first edition of the books or the normal first edtion that has been repaired professionally a long time ago. what i have is vol 1 of the george harrap michael collins and the making of a new ireland and it is absolutly mint condition its unbelievable how good of nick it is in considering its 1926 and an abolute antique. although it is fairly fragile and i certainly wouldnt lend to any of my friends for reading as i wouldnt feel confident it could be read and read as i would be afraid about the pages coming loose of something. i am after volume two also a 1st edtion to complete my set, i have searched and searched to find the book that i need but to know avail. thats how i came across your question asking if yours was an original or not. i got my copy off ebay believe it or not for about 75 pound which was a bargin. but if you ever see or hear of a 1st edtion copy published by harrap and its in good nick be sure to let me know as i am looking it.

Thanks,I bought a book recently called The ROSE OF St GERMAINES OR The Siege of Limerick by Agnes M Stewart, published by Kelly,Piet and Company no 174 Baltimore st 1872 it is a hard cover green with lots of ads at the rear for catholic publications and i dont suppose its worth much. I know a bit about silver and would be happy to try to identify any silver items if the information re hallmarks are provided.
