    Lo All,
Can anyone recommend a good set of flat pedals that can be used with Toe Clips and straps.
I am hoping to do some adventure racing next year and I would prefer not to be carrying an extra pair of shoes in the backpack!!

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

MKS clips are good value and great quality, straps can get expensive. Cheaper straps can stretch and arent as well made. Planet X might still have deals on MKS and Toshi straps

One more thing, shimano make shoes for flat pedals with a stiff grippy sole that you can walk in too, they cost around 70. A stiff sole will make a big difference. Some other brands make them too

I'm going the opposite way. Did an adventure race in september. Had toe clip pedals, so could cycle in the trail shoes. However, in the run part of the race, the shoes got wet and soggy. My feet got really cold and were like blocks of ice when I got to the finish and its very hard to pedal when your toes are cold. Recently upgraded bike with spd pedals and shoes. Will do like most did during the race that I was in, and leave my shoes and dry socks in a plastic bag in the transition area. For me it will be a much better option. and will only take 50 seconds to change. ;)

It's not cycling shoes he'll be be needing but trail runners as there is hill running involved as well as cycling. I know a guy that did the ballyhoura blitz in shoes like that and he ended up spending a fortune on physio because of the 10k he ran in shoes for flat pedals.

This isn't really an option for all adventure races as some of them have more than one transition so you end up having to carry the shoes with you and multiple transitions means multiple changes i.e time lost. The sea2summit in two weeks has three running and two cycling sections. Some races you can get away with spd's and others toe clips and straps are the better option.

Thanks for all the replies lads. Its very much appreciated.

I am only starting out in the Adventure races so I am going to keep it as simple as possible for now.

I came across those MKS GR9s. They seem to be the job.

However would single clips or double clips be better? Not having used either I do not know the pros and cons. Example of each below:

    Thanks again

I'm not sure if he he had trained with them but they are designed for cycling primarily. There's a big difference in casual walking around and running on hill, bog, mud trails etc.

These have a stiff sole, that says it all about their suitability for running.

I would personally go for plastic ones or else try these powergrips. Steel clips used to be used on old racers and were designed to be used with proper cycle shoes so they may not fit well with runners.

I think this is what I seen on Mary Mulchrones bike at WAR this year with flat pedals and they looked like a good compromise

i got a set of these which are cool , handy for nipping to the shop or flip them over and stick on your shoes and head off for a few hrs

    Thanks Head The Wall.
I was looking at those Powergrips. They might be the easier option rather than messing with straps each time. Thanks for the info on the clips also. Forgot about the racing shoes vs runners.

    Thanks for that Denlaw.
I think I will stick to the clips & straps for now though. If I do find a good running shoe that will take the SPDs though they would be a good choice.

    Thanks again.

Pearl Izumi Fuel are runners that are SPD compatible but you're not really going to find a good spd shoe that you can run properly in. The Sole wouldn't be flexible which is needed to adapt to running on offroad terrain and the grip doesn't look great either

Thanks for that Head The Wall.
Not sure I would chance them to be honest. Might be an option for the hybrid though.

    Thanks again
