I am just wondering if it's possible to play Xvid etc from a USB flash drive on the PS3, or is there an easy way to do it from a laptop?

I'm not sure about Xvid but you can definitely play MP4 videos from a USB drive on your PS3 without having to copy the video to ths PS3..

Dont think Xvid will play from usb.

Try this instead. Its simple to setup.

The girl I want to set it up for does not have a router, and on a video FAQ for what you link it is said one is required.

Maybe I could convert the videos to a format that works, the girl's not very technical, and just plugging a flash drive in seems very easy.

Xvid works perfectly fine, it's an MPEG 4 SP codec.

Best practice to to put videos in a folder /PS3/Videos/ or is it easy enough to navigate to the videos no matter where they are on the flash drive?

I don't bother, can just hit triangle to bring up the list. Since you'll be using it on things other than the PS3 I'd save just go with whatever folder structure ya want.
