    Hey there,
I am currently in first year business and law UCD, and wondering is it even possible to get a decent paying job as a lawyer, in today's market or 4/5 years time? Would you have to be getting a 1:1 or 2:1 degree to even stand a chance? Will the legal job market improve in 5 or 6 years?

I'm an IT Specialist with good knowledge of Irish and European Law regarding Intellectual Property, Data Retention/Protection, Freedom of Information etc.

What additional training would I need to become a solicitor specialising in protecting the civil rights and privacy of individual clients who all to often find themselves becoming victims of powerful and litigious organisations?

How much would I be paid?

you would need to pass the 8 Fe1s (entrance exams into the law society) and obtain and complete a training contract in a solicitors firm - would take up to 3 years!

you would then most likely need/want to specialise in your chosen area mentioned above!

You sound like you've a brilliant background for these new-ish areas.

Some of the best specialist solicitors bring backgrounds from non-legal areas.

Re pay; well, its really summed by your own post. If you are thinking about working in the particular manner you outlined, its unlikely you'll want to work for the kinds of firms (usually big) who would be used by such bad guy organisations. If you want to play the role you outline, I'd more imagine you as a sole practitioner, with this as your specialisation and so on and so on. Then, what you're paid is what you make!

High pay and fighting the good fight don't always go hand in hand. More is the pity
