Would welcome comments from new Focus owners.
Is 95 enough or is it worth going for 115bhp?

I think the general consensus of the motoring forum would be to get the more powerful version :D

Seriously though, i think at this stage, no car in that class should have less than 100 bhp, especially not in a diesel.

I think the general consensus of this motoring forum would be to buy a Skoda Octavia tdi instead..:D

On paper there's not much between the two engines really although they could be very different in real life actually driving them.

I had the 90bhp version of the outgoing model and found it perfectly adequate for normal driving.

Perhaps if you are regularly towing a heavy trailer or have 5 adults on board and live at the top of a steep hill you might benefit from the extra power but I certainly never found the 90bhp lacking for a family of four + luggage.

In the old model my 90bhp one also had the benefit of having no DPF so that was one less thing to possibly go wrong, what's the story with DPF's in the new model?

Can anyone tell me if all Zetec models are the higher 115bhp?

All new diesel cars sold in the EU since the begining of 2011 had to have a DPF fitted due to new emmission regulations. This signaled the death of the Ford 1.8 TDCi and VAG 1.9 TDi. The 2011 run out Focus 1.6 TDCi was 110bhp only and had a DPF.

Back to the OP's question. The 1.6 TDCi has been reworked in the new Focus, it is alot smoother than before and even the 95bhp has a six speed gear box afaik. The 115bhp version has been fitted to the much heavier Volvo S80 last year and that gets around fine so the 95bhp Focus might be grand. The best thing to do is test drive both versions and see which one you are happy with.

2008 Irish Focus diesel was available in 1.6 TDCi (90bhp) and 1.8 TDCi (115bhp). Neither of these engines had a DPF. The only diesel engine in the previous Focus to have a DPF was the 1.6 TDCi (110bhp) version which was generally only sold in the Ghia model at the time. However it was more common in the UK lower spec models.

Just to add the 1.8 TDCi is a Ford unit and originates from the Sierra. The 1.6 TDCi is a Peugeot/Citroen engine.

    Another angle here??

I have had 2 previous Focus both 1.6 petrol Zetecs
I dont do enough mileage to have purchased a diesel before.
While I dont do a big annual mileage (<10k), most of it is on long journeys.
Now there isn't same price difference between petrol & diesel and most garages are pushing the diesels saying there is no demand for petrol.
If I push for petrol car will I have a problem selling it in a few years time.
Tax difference is +€50 and my journey profile means the fuel difference costs wont be as much as average one.

No you can get a 95bhp Zetec model too.

I've been driving a 115bhp Zetec since early July, and it's a very good car. No issues nor complaints at all. It's very comfortable, smooth, and refined. 115bhp version is adequate, and certainly more desirable than the lower powered version. My journeys are medium distance and the computer assures me it's returning c. 53mpg.

A guy on a ford forum has a 90bhp version and stuck in a bluefin, now he's getting 120bhp with better economy to boot.

I'm no car expert, but the experience of myself and friends/family has taught me that when buying a car in Ireland, you're generally better off ignoring the bottom engine - it typically belongs to the class below what you're looking at.

Buy what you want and don't worry about the resale. There will be a demand for used Petrols soon enough.

Based on the list of cars my next car will come from, I'm already resigned to the fact that I'll have to import it to get a petrol model.

Anyone else have one of these bluefin gadgets?
