My 05 mazda 3 diesel failed its nct yesterday. The reason was for the emissions - when it was reved, the smoke coming out the exhaust was filthy black. Its driving fine, i do about 800 km a week on it.

Does anyone know what could be wrong with it?

    What specifically about the emissions?

Has it been serviced? Black smoke could be as simple as dirty air filter.

They wouldn't even test it because the exhaust was so dirty.

It had a full service in june. Since then its done 12000 km, but it only needs a service every 20000km

Is this the 1.6 Diesel engine that Peugeot/Ford/Citroen use..?
If so then your injectors could be overfueling or the your dpf is blocking.

Yeah it is the same engine as in the ford/peugeot.

It could be any number of things. Depending on your driving style the cure could be as simple as an "Italian tune up" and a tin of fuel system cleaner.

Most 2005 mazda 3 will not have a DPF system.
It is possible it could be the air flow meter which is located on the pipe leading from the air filter box to the engine. This sensor can become contaminated with oil and will not function properly. Cleaning may suffice. If not replacement.
    Hope this helps.

Unlikely, as the MAF/AFM is after the filter.
