Deleting backup files

    Hi all,

I have a partition which is displaying 35gb of backup files and another 17gb of 'others' as it calls it. I'm trying to get rid of these so called backup files and others as I don't need them. I have a separate external hard drive for the 'Time machine' backups. My problem is I can't figure out how to delete them and I've no idea what these 'others' files are as I've little or nothing on the mac as it is. I've about 40gb taken up from my calculations so this mysterious 17gb on others is just that.. a mystery.

Can anyone help? P.s. I'm very pc literate, I'm just a bit new to macs.

    Thanks in advance!

If its a backup file, then when you drag it to the trash not all of it will be deleted. You need to drag all of the files you want to delete to the trash in the dock, hold the option(alt) key and click 'empty' on the top right in the trash window. That will get rid of everything

Thanks man, but I think I've figured out what the backup files are. I've found that with my time machine in place there is now temporary back up files prepared on my local disk. Once there is a daily backup of my time machine the whole lot just vanishes and presumably the updates are backed up on my time machine.

I'm still working out what the 'others' are though.
