Sorry but I dont know the right terms for the parts of my fireplace

The 2 side walls in my fireplace are crumbling down, is it ok to just get the pieces that are comming off and cement them back on or are more drastic measures needed

Also, whats the best way to cure fire cement.

    Thanks

Probably just your fireback. Pics would help with a more definite diagnosis.

It can be replaced. You can temporarily use fire cement to replace the bits that are falling off but, it wont be long until it falls out again. Best off to replace. Not the biggest job in the world.

Replacement firebacks are available in two parts to make replacement easier.

thanks for the replies, how much would I be looking at spending for a new fireback, am trying to way up the costs compared to a superser

forgot to say, theres a back boiler, will that make much of a difference in the fireback

If you've a backboiler, then you'll really need to post up some pics, as the firebacks are different to a conventional fire.

FWIW, if you heat the house from the back boiler then its definitely more cost effective than a superser.

Ill get pics up as soon as possible, I had a good look this morning and it looks like the two side walls are seperate to the back, and its only the side walls that are collapsing, the seem to be held in by a "hook/clip" at the top of each side.

It sounds like you have an Epic or similar type of back boiler that heats water only. the side cheeks are available for these but you might have to do abit of searching to find replacements.

Ok, got the pics, hope it clears things up
If the cheeks are hard to get, is it possible to get them made to measure

It's as I thought, you could try ringing builders suppliers/ fireplace installers/CoOp shops etc. older outlets would be your best bet.
When fitting the new cheeks some of the old filling will need to be cleaned out and refilled with lime/sand or vermiculite.
Use heat resistent rope to seal between the front of the cheeks and the back of the fire surround

Is there any way it can be repaired and not replaced or is it a lost cause

Any repairs won't last, if you locate them they should only cost €15-20 each.
    Where are you located?

It seems to be fairly old so I'd say it's an Epic and all were the same size.Sorry I can't help with location.
