any of you farm techies put your smartphone to use on the farm. I'm thinking it would be handy when tagging calves, maybe scan the tag. i find that we tag a few calves together and trying to keep a damp piece of paper with dams numbers is messy. Is there any farming apps for vet/medicine records?
    any ideas welcome

Have agrinet package for past 4-5 years, I find it an excellent job for record keeping, the big thing is just put in as much info as you can. The reports you can pull out of it are handy for day to day decisions.

Got rid of the bits of paper everywhere at least :D

are you in dairy?? what kind of records does it record??

    Yes I'm dairy

I record things like calving, inseminations, stock movements and drying off dates. They can then be emailed to the department (calvings) or icbf (inseminations, dry off dates).

New years resolution is to record the fertiliser and slurry applications on the grass site. As well as grazing dates-not sure I could weekly measure to get the most out of the grass side but seen someone who does and the info is unreal out of it

I think if you put in the info it prob would, example being if you bought weanlings now, weighed them, weighed them in February to get their daily gain, put in you were giving them 3 kg of nuts at 240 a tonne to see how much it cost, add a cost per day for silage, sell them and know exact profit per animal.

This may be bad example-never done it myself

You could do all that with a bit of time spent doing up a simple excel package and a few formulas! ;) And you'd have it the way you wanted it.

That's fine if you just want to do that one example of what I said.
The department won't accept an excel file for your herd register after.
The way I feel about it is this, you're paying agrinet for a professional service, don't think anyone will use every page on the program but that's not what it's about, it's about inputting your info and getting the program to work for you, it's false economy to think your saving a few quid doing it yourself.

Being able to look at the calving pen on your phone is very handy when away from the farm.

    Hello Guys

I'm a final year college computing student and currently working on my final year project. I'm developing a dairy farming android application that provides a host of different functions that relate to dairy farming, livestock management, nitrate management and crop management.

Just wondering what your general opinion is of the use of mobile technology is on farms and being able to access and enter data pertaining to a particular farming operation while on the move or inspecting a farm.

Any opinions, considerations and views are welcome.

    :)

Not really an app as such, I use notes to keep details of all our machinery, our quotes for feed/fertiliser, gates, our pps numbers, etc

I also have a photo of our maps on my phone which is handy to check the acreage in fields as we are new to farming & hard to remember acreage of different fields

    Hi lads
    I am using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blackhillock.livestock
at the moment it's not bad for a free app . I'm only getting used to it though so it's early days .

Cheers for the feedback so far guys, greatly appreciated.

If all goes well my android app will be a bit more universal that some of the current ones out there and have multiple functionalities in one simple to use application as oppossed to seperated farming functional tools spread across several app versions

have an idea for an app for the mart sellers/buyers

i know there are plenty people well practiced at working out the €/kg or the money with the weight during the bidding but for those of us not so rehearsed.... would it be an idea to be able to enter the weight of the animal on the scales into an app and it could show your limit price from a pre entered €/kg limit.
I know during the bidding process you have very little time to be fidgeting and fooling with a phone entering data but it would be a help to buyers & Sellers alike

I know there are lots of variables but just thought it might be an idea.

It might be handy for the seller for an idea of what they are worth , but I have a feeling that most buyers could tell what kind of money they are going to go on a beast to within a tenner without even havin to look at the scales . I could be wrong though
