windows vista color resolution problem

In Windows Vista, I set the colour resolution (in control panel) to Medium 16bit (from the Highest 32bit).

However, the next time that I re-start the laptop (a Sony VAIO), the resolution is reset to the 32 bit setting soon after start-up.

What is the reason for this and how does one prevent this occuring?

    SB

why do you want to stop this happening ?

most drivers / cards are optimised for true colour rather than 16 bit , so not sure there would be any speed benefits

    model no ?

you may be able to get updated drivers from sony or the video site

I would agree with Captn Midnight that updating the drivers might be a place to start... But I would also be looking at the possibility that some application which is running at startup that REQUIRES 32 bit colour, and is maybe overriding your own settings... It could be Windows Aero Theme.. have you tried disabling this?

    Disable Aero On Windows Vista

    JonathanAnon,

I reckon that it may be something in the start-up that is causing the color resolution to reset itself. That is interesting what you suggest about the Aero colour theme. I will try that first; if that does not work I will look into the drivers as Capt'n Midnight suggested.

I am not at the PC in question now; I will report back on how this progresses.

To answer Capt'n Midnight on why I want to stop this from happening.

I have two photo editing programmes that will only work with 16 bit resolution. The programmes probably pre-date Windows Vista.

You could get 24 bit drivers for windows for workgroups 20 years ago

might be worth considering alternatives like paint.net or gimpshop
or a second hand copy of a later version of the program if you can find it

a virtual machine might be an option too

but check if you can get drivers from the video card manufacturers site first

    Update:

I tried disabling the Windows Aero Theme.
However, after a re-start the 16bit resolution was still changed back to
    the 32 bit setting.

    I will debug some more....
