With Muammar Gadaffi now fading fast into the murk of historical gloom, the situation in which his son Saif-al-Islam now finds himself poses some interesting questions.

It is also interesting to see the ICC appears to be basing its main case upon the "hiring of mercenaries" issue...
"We have a witness who explained how Saif was involved with the planning of the attacks against civilians, including in particular the hiring of core mercenaries from different countries and the transport of them, and also the financial aspects he was covering," ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo told Reuters during a visit to Beijing.()

One of the initial tenets of the Libyan revolt was how Col Gadaffi was deploying large forces of Mercenaries to subdue native Libyan revolt.

However since then, very little evidence has surfaced of any such large-scale use of mercenaries from anywhere in the region.

Indeed,it could be said that mercenaries worldwide beat a path to the rebel side, where they often performed with great vim and vigour as can be attested on many U-Tube and News clips of actions during the revolt.

It may also be worth asking of the ICC will be sending Mr Moreno-Ocampo to Ryiadh any day soon in order to outline to the Saudi Royal Family our understanding of the word Mercenary.....

What is equally worth considering in relation to the ICC,is how Mr Moreno-Ocampo is certainly making a serious media-play for his role as MR ICC.

Given that the Gadaffi clan continue to occupy a position of respect amongst several strategically placed desert tribes as well as amongst a significant chunk of other North African peoples,it will be worthwhile to observe what happens as the World Media circus packs up it's own tents and heads back to "civilization".... ?

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

    Hmm...

If Libya descends into an Irish style (we've got success; let's have a split) type civil war or just plain anarchy in the next couple of years I could see Saif conceivably being able to pull off a lightning coup/

I concur RandomName, but that very possibility may well have sealed young Mr Gadaffi's fate.

I rate this guy quite highly, but for different reasons than I rated his pop.

Gadaffi the elder had a vision for his country and had the self-belief to push this through,he also knew the "Old" libya where Italian and British colonial rule was still within reach....that Berlusconi moment when Col G turned up with the Black n White photo of the chained Rebel leader captured by the Italians spoke volumes of how effective an operator Gadaffi himself was.

Saif al Islam is of a different era,he never knew,at first hand the "Old" Libya, but he developed into a VERY savvy Political operator indeed, managing to ingratiate himself with almost every Western Government in the lead up to Libya's reacceptance into our golden circle.

I would love to see Saif al Islam take the stand in The Hague.

If he has his powder dry, then he will have some evidence to give.....will he make it ?.....anybody with a PaddyPower account out there willing to go for it...??
