I've been trying to find out how to use my iphone to gain an internet connection for my new netbook running windows 7. I'm going to be travelling here in New Zealand for a week or ten days so I need internet access.

I've got as far as setting up the personal hotspot/ tethering. I don't seem to require any special add ons for my tariff or any of that nonsense. The setting says "Your iPhone's Internet connection is being shared over USB". It looks like it's all good to go but I can't get my computer to discover the iphone.

Why not simply share it over wifi?

Good God, yes, I just noticed the New Zealand bit: OP, do not do this if you're roaming!

Fair point. It doesn't seem to have any restrcitions to using it to connect to the internet but I'll double check that it doesn't require an add on. I'm not roaming. I have a rolling contract with Vodafone NZ.

From what I can find online, using the Personal Hotspot via USB is the best method.

Either way, I'm too thick to figure it out. I just need to figure out how to use my iphone to get internet access for my netbook...

So you're on a Vodafone NZ sim? That's ok so.

On the iPhone, turn on the Personal hotspot in settings. Then look for the wiFi signal from your phone on the laptop........

My laptop can only 'see' the landline based wifi in the house. It can't see the iphone. I've been looking at all the settings relating to internet access but I've run out of ideas.

Just to check OP, do you have itunes installed on that computer because the hotspot feature will not work otherwise.

S***e. My itunes is on my laptop back in Ireland and I just got this netbook as a travel tool. I was going to download itunes but that's a whole other kettle of fish with regard to wiping out all my music etc.

Does that mean I'm scuppered or can I download itunes without wiping all my music etc?

    get the App PDANet.

There is a wifi and a usb sharing feature.
for the USB though, you have to download and install a client app. very small.
    http://junefabrics.com/iphone/index.php
phone must be Jailbroken to download app from Cydia.
(MyWi is an excellent tool for this also but its $10 from the Cydia store, Pdanet is free)

Or install just the software needed from iTunes and leave itunes itself out.

    1. Downloaded latest version of iTunes.
    2. Use 7Zip to extract the setup files to a temp directory.
    3. Install AppleApplicationSupport.msi.
    4. Install AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (in this order).
    5. Reboot your machine.
    6. Done.

I thought so, same thing happened to me, bought a new laptop went to go online and the fecking hotspot feature wouldn't work. Had to go to a neighbours house to download itunes once I had that installed all was grand.

Now as for wiping you music, no itunes will not wipe all your music if you don't let it... download it, do not at any point connect your iphone to the computer, install it, once it's installed go into Edit>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically, check the box and there you go.

Forgive the technophobe speak but what I managed to find out online and what I've done is you can get the AppleMobileDeviceSupport software on it's own without having to download itunes in it's entirety. I did this and installed it but what happens now is that you connect the phone it makes that dun-DUN to denote that something has connected when you switch on the Personal Hotspot on the phone. It makes the DUN-dun sound again when you click the Personal Hotspot off again.

However, the netbook still can't see the iphone. I'll let you know how this is resolved..... eventually.
