So im looking at moving out pending a job interview goes well. Its full time work so my question is in relation to tax. Im currently working a 16 hour contract and on the casual.

I had a baby 7 months ago and she will be staying with me 3 nights per week. People say my tax will go down seeing as i have a child. Me and her mother are not together and i pay maintenance each month. With work and the casual i get about 260 per week and get taxed very little, as bad as it sounds im wondering if a full time position will be a huge step up. Im becoming confused as people are planting different thoughts in my head and i dunno what to do. People say that with the full time position ill be getting taxed so much that it wouldnt be worth it

Any help would be great, Cheers

You can check what tax yo will pay at www.taxcalc.eu your tax credit wont be increased as you are not a lone parent

The more you gross (before you pay tax) will always mean the more you nett (after tax, into your hand). There are a few niggle points, but these are only worth a few euros. You can never be taxed more than about 50% of your gross. Lots of people bemoan payiong tax, but don't realise that earning more always means more in their pocket.

Having a child doesn't make a whole lot of difference to your taxes, except in a few limited circumstances, e.g. there is a tax credit for children with disabilities. If you are paying maintenance for the mother (as opposed to the child), this can be set up such that it is counted as her income, not yours for tax purposed.

If you earn €9/hour, work 40 hours per week x 52 weeks = €18,720 per year, you pay approximately €1,100 in PRSI and USC, no tax and come out with €339 per week

If you earn €18/hour, work 40 hours per week x 52 weeks = €37,440 per year, you pay approximately €5,845 in PRSI, USC and tax and come out with €607 per week

Housing wise, it may be useful to stay where you are, certainly until you are happy the job will be permanent. That is unless you have to move. Rent can easily cost €300-500/month + bills in a shared property and more if you need an extra room for the child.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. If i got the job it would automatically be permanent as its an internet position in my current job. My current hourly wage is 10.38 PH. The choice to move out isnt so much a necessity but a personal choice that i think would personally benefit my me. Getting out of the house and gaining some independence would be nice and i would be willing to pay cash in order to get it.
