Usually get Bridgestone Turanzas or Vredstein HiTracs and both are good. Anyone have any other recommendations?

MIND READER.......or I missed another thread somewhere.

I have a mix of Bridgestones and Hankooks on my Passat. Both have worn very well.

I have the bridgestones up front and I replaced Hankooks on the rear today with new Hankooks. For the price/handling/quality I find them good

We have a 2003 Focus van for work and use Goodyear Eagle NCT5 Tyres on it in that size. As an all round package for dry grip, wet grip, stability and wear I can't fault them. I took them off on Saturday after two years and 35k miles to fit a set of winter Tyres and they are all still legal and it is only in the last 6 weeks or so that wet grip has gone off a bit. I will be fitting another set next spring for definite.

I am going to second the vredestein. I got a set of Hi-Trac 2s fitted a couple of weeks ago after getting a few recommendations for them, they are great in the dry but they really do seem to come into their own in the wet. They also seem to be much quieter than the infinity's they replaced. I got them fitted for 90 each (205 / 55 / R16) which was 20 less than the bridgestone.

Jesus I got offered the Bridgestones for €95 each yesterdays but took the Hankooks at €80

Saying Vredestein tyres are good because they are better than Infinity tyres doesn't really carry much weight as Infinity are utter crap, especially in the wet. I have driven loads of cars with the Vreds fitted and I don't think they are anything special. They certainly don't stand comparison with any of the top 5 or 6 brands.

What would be a better tyre..

The premium brands, no contest. Goodyears I mentioned above, Bridgestone ER300, anything Michelin, Dunlop SP Fast Response, Continental Premium Contact etc.

Got four Hi-Tracs in the end. €320 for the 4 at Victory tyres Limerick, which is about the same price as the online retailers but without the hassle.

Saw in the local paper Heffernan Tyres in Kildare have 4 x 16s Bridgestones for €300 includes fitting, balancing and VAT. Not bad really.

That’s the same place I went to, a very nice guy to deal with.

Tradeoff between Quality/Brand Vs Hardwearing Vs Grip.

You get what you pay for in some respects.

The hard wearing tyres will last longer but dont have the same grip, expecially in the wet.

I had 4 Bridgestones on a Passat and recently changed the two front one's for BF Goodrich (on a recommendation) and to be honest, I prefer the Bridgestones. Paid more too!

Interesting comments from George though - I will take that on board next time around!

Hmm, I have a mk 1.5 Focus with 195/55/15s on it. May be a different set of alloys or something though.
