99 opel corsa - few questions

I was just looking at a 99 opel corsa, 1.2l.

It has almost 100k miles on the clock, so the main question is do they have a timing belt or timing chain?

The NCT is up near the middle of next year, how much do you reckon the car is worth?

I don't intend keeping it for a long time, it's just to do for a few months until I leave here again.

They have a head gasket that likes to crack so make sure that's done. I'm pretty sure it's a belt as well.

What price is it at? They're pretty sluggish, but reliable other than the gasket I believe.

    It's overpriced (I believe) at €950.

I know it's going to be sluggish, I've been driving a 2litre avensis diesel for the past few months so it's not going to compare to it. I even drove a brand new kia rio 1.4 rental car in England a couple of weeks ago and it was mega sluggish, so I can only imagine what a 12 year old 1.2 will be like.

Why on earth are you buying that then? Plenty of cars out there... Just keep an eye on the bangernomics thread. If you got 950 to spend, plenty of nice things to get, with tax and NCT.

Don't make your bed if you don't like what you're going to be sleeping with!

A 1999 would have the newer 16v engine with a timing chain. The pre facelift Corsa B had the old 8v engine with a belt.

The 1.2 will be the 4 cylinder 16v in 99 flavour.

The head gaskets don't just randomly fail either, people not checking the coolant level regularly and leaking water pumps cause them to fail.

The main thing to check with those engines is that the chain isn't excessively noisy. Poorly maintained ones can suffer chain tensioner issues.

I bookmarked this thread a while back when I was doing a bit of research on the same basic car. It may be of some use.http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055269694&page=2

Everyone says avoid the 1.0 3 cylinder as they are so unreliable.

First, the only difference between the 1.0 12v and the 1.2 16v is the extra cylinder, almost every component is the same.

Second, my first car was a 3 cylinder corsa which I got with 26k on it and, with proper servicing, didn't have any problems worth mentioning until I sold it with over 110,000 miles on it.

My uncle also has a 00 1.2 16v corsa which he bought new and its been serviced ONCE in those 11 years(I gave up trying) and, somehow, its never let him down once!

Had a '93 Corsa once and drove the newer version all round France as a rental.
Desperate auld yokes, no poke, steering manages to be too many turns from lock to lock whilst being heavy, terrible handling, dull to be in, depressing all round.
Something Jap would be better and so would walking.

    Thanks for the replies.

How much do you reckon the car is worth?

It depends on the car. You can't just give a valuation on an 11 year old car without seeing it. It could be worth the full asking price or it might only be worth half that.
