    Hi,
I'm a first year student in NUIG and i have applied for a maintenance grant, but have not yet received confirmation. I am now considering withdrawing from NUIG and reapplying for college in Limerick next year through the CAO. If i was to with draw, and cancel my grant application now would i be eligible to receive the full grant for both semesters of college next year? I am aware i will have to pay the tutition fees for the first semester of college next year myself. Any information would be greatly appreciated...

    Hey :)
I was in the exact same boat as you last year!
I contacted my VEC(Limerick City) about it last year and they had promised me it wouldn't affect my grant in any form when I returned.

However, I just received my grant award last week.. Where they told me they're keeping my first payment because I attended first term last year..
That's €400... which is a lot of money for me :/
And I didn't get ANY payment from them last year.

Whoa thats ridiculous, have you kept the leter they sent you last year where they said this wouldn't effect your grant in any way? As far as i can see they have absolutely no grounds to keep that four hundred from you. Repeating is expensive enough as it is, i'm sickened that i'm going to be stuck with over 3000 in fees next year, all becuase i attended a month and a half of college this year..

If everyone got a grant for repeating - there would be no incentive to progress and the taxpayer would end up paying the piper as usual.....

They are asking if they can repeat and get the grant when they have NOT yet received the grant for their first year, not can they get another first year grant

Exactly, I'm not expecting or looking for a grant this year.
