Hi folks , looking for an informed opinion on whether the watch for sale on this ad is genuine or not .
We'd greatly appreciate any input here ( please post on this thread rather than on the ad :) ) .

    Thanks in advance ,
    nessyguin (AMod)

I know little about watches but I do have several good ones including a fake Armani which looks genuine to all but the expert. Judging by prices for Grand Carrera watches on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=Grand+Carrera+watch&_sacat=See-All-Categories (usually 4 figures!) the one on Adverts is a real bargain at €100. :D

No brand name on the inside of the box and no photo of the back of the watch tells me it's a fake. Expensive watches have elaborate logos and a serial number on the back. The big giveaway if you have the watch in your hand is how the second hand moves, if it ticks one second at a time it has a cheap quartz movement, if it sweeps smoothly (about five ticks per second) it's a mechanical movement. Almost all fakes have quartz movements.

Cheers :) . Without doubt the price is a great indicator but I'd be reluctant to remove any ad on the grounds that is is too cheap :o . It's a rare occurrence these days but I've seen a few high-value items sold at absurdly low prices in the past and even given away free !

That's great , coylemj ! Obviously we can't check the movement but knowing about the serial number is a huge help .

I'll remove the ad now . Should any forum users wish to view the pics just post on here or PM me and I'll upload them .

Thanks to you both for your help , also to the mods here for indulging our Philistine threads :)

Just a heads up, cheap Chinese origin movements have rendered this kinda passe as a way to judge a fake, unless it's a "rolex" for 20 quid. Indeed I'd say most fakes today above 100 quid have mechanical movements. Not always cheap ass Chinese ones either. Base level movements from makers like ETA(who would supply many of the big boys) can be gotten for around the 100 quid. So someone seeking to do a halfway decent fake/rip off will be willing to buy one of those. If you want a broader knowledge of what may or may not be a fake do some research online. Boards' own Watches and Timepiece forum wouldn't be a bad start.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
