Whats the fascination with zombies? I dont get it. I was on stumbleupon earlier and in the space of about 20 mins I was directed to about 5 different pages related to zombies; zombie walks, zombie survival, zombie origins, zombie movies etc

I understood the vampire thing because that twilight film was popular, but zombies? Its been going on for a while now, is it to do with that Walking Dead show or what?

Walking dead = A good lot of any population!

Also watch George A Romeros trilogy of the dead (night, dawn, day). Nothing else of his because they're not great.

Then watch the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

Also watch Charlie Brookers Dead Set (the only Big Brother I'd watch).

Watch Zombi. And.........um...........yeah can't think of anything else.

+1 for World War Z (soon to be a film). But stay away from the classics mixed with zombie lore. They're absolute sh*te. Oh! The Walking Dead (comic). Read that too.

    And the zombie survival forum.

George Romero should make a film about how so many of the new fangled zombie obsessives have sort of become the new unthinking masses / hivemind cultural consumers. Satirical subtext ahoy!

    Why not Zombies?

Zombies are awesome, Vampires are boring.

Someone else should do it because Romero's films are now pure ****.

That they certainly have. He's one of the few who seems to understand that satirical potential of the walking undead, even still, however.

It's not just about the zombies, it's about how people would react to zombies. It's got everything, mortal peril on a personal level, the loss of society, Armageddon, new beginnings. It's got the lot.

Yep. Post apocalyptic scenarios are extremely fascinating to many - maybe because they're examinations of the human condition at its rawest.

Or maybe because they're just awesome...

They are human but dead ones, so you can hit them with shovels or cricket bats, blow their heads off with shot guns, munch them in machines, run them over in trucks, even women and children zombies are not exempt from this gore fest.

So you get all the blood and guts without the "oh my Gawd" because they are only zombies. So zombies are cool. I for one am sick of the way zombies are portrayed in films, I think the undead should be given equal rights and treated with respect, even the undead have to live.

Err anyway, it must be my bleeding heart liberal ways, I am glad the OP started this debate.

The only futures worth considering are Dystopian of zombie laden.

    Everything else is just boring.

Zombies arent popular because of the walking dead.
The walking dead wouldnt have existed if they werent already so popular.

    28 days later
    Resident evil
    * of the deads
    Max brooks novels
    left 4 dead
    dead rising

The reason all of these things exist is because people recognise there is a huge market for anything zombie related.

Zombie stuff generally deals with armageddon, surivival, killing loved ones, suicide.

5 Scientific Reasons a Zombie Apocalypse Could Actually Happen

    #5. Brain Parasites
half the human population on Earth is infected with toxoplasmosa,
this is how cats control us

    #4. Neurotoxins
Clairvius Narcisse was a Haitian guy who was declared dead by two doctors and buried in 1962. They found him wandering around the village 18 years later. It turned out the local voodoo priests had been using naturally occurring chemicals to basically zombify people and putting them to work on the sugar plantations

    #3. The Real Rage Virus
When Mad Cow gets in humans, they call it Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
it proves widespread brain infections of the Rage variety are just a matter of waiting for the right disease to come along.

    #2. Neurogenesis
They're already able to re-grow the brains of comatose head trauma patients until they wake up and walk around again.

also You don't need the cortex to survive; all you need is the stem and you'll still be able to mindlessly walk and eat and enjoy Grey's Anatomy. This is how chickens can keep walking around after they've been beheaded (including one case where the chicken lived for 18 months without a head).

    #1. Nanobots
Some day there will be nanobots in your brain. Those nanobots will be programmed to keep functioning after you die. They can form their own neural pathways, meaning they can use your brain to keep operating your limbs after you've deceased and, presumably, right up until you rot to pieces in mid-stride.

The nanobots will be programmed to self-replicate, and the death of the host will mean the end of the nanobots. To preserve themselves, they'd need to transfer to a new host. Therefore, the last act of the nanobot zombie would be to bite a hole in a healthy victim, letting the nanobots steam in and set up camp in the new host. Once in, they can shut down the part of the brain that resists (the cortex) and leave the brain stem intact. They will have added a new member to the unholy army of the undead.

As long as it doesn't actually happen, most of us would be zombie food rather than the action hero we assume we'll be.

    Are mummies the original zombie?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,933 ✭✭✭Logical Fallacy

    Are mummies the original zombie?

Nope. Ancient Egypt has no obvious zombie or mummy mythology. When your Deities have cat heads and take the form of giant beatles that roll the sun across the sky i guess those tropes are a little boring.

Vampires/Zombies as myth largely started in Europe due to rabies outbreaks, although the term zombie didn't get coined until the 1920's in relation to Voodoo practices in Haiti.
