USB Wireless Modem installation

I am having issues getting a USB modem going in Mint & Ubuntu.

The wifi switch on my HP laptop is broken & stuck in the OFF position, not an uncommon fault apparently, so I got a little Realtek USB modem to use instead.

lsusb shows the the modem is present.

    I am following these instructions:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsRealTek#USB

Here are the facts of the situation:
    - the modem came with drivers on a mini CD, and an install.sh file, which fails
    - I don't know exactly which driver I need to use, there's 2 on the disk.
    - The modem worked immediately on my windows virtual pc in Mint

I'm just hoping has been through this before, and might be able to pass on some wise words.
