    hello all.
this being my first deer season people keep talking about this magical time where stags run out of the forest and into the back of yer van where they commit the ancient samuri art of hari-kiri and disembowel themselves by the hundreds...people call this the "rut". but i have yet to see it going on. am i just not looking for the right thing or what? is there a rut in wicklow/dublin yet? have i missed it? anyone know?
    Thanks

The best of the rut is over for this year Dub,and its not quite as handy as you've heard to bag a Sika stag.

Was out the weekend before last and there were stags calling from deep in the forestry, but not out in the open. Reckon I'll be in the same spot next week so we'll see then whether anything's changed. We'll see how farmland treats me tomorrow morning! :D

The rut has been ongoing in the woods round here for the past 2 weeks at least. In fact on calm nights I can hear the odd rumble from my current residence on the edge of town:cool:

Clearly living in town for college is keeping me away from the good stuff! You over by Glending then Birdnuts? Should be no shortage of deer behind you in that spot.

Thats the spot - saw a big stag and some hinds their only last week, also has a growing population of Wild goats in the nearby quarry:cool:.

PS: Love to get some permissions in the surrouding area but the one farmer I approached was rather obnoxious to say the least:(

Lovely spot. I'm over in Manor Kilbride. Have hunted goats near Red Bog, but not over nearer the other quarry. Meant to have a scout about for permissions on that side of town as I have some over by Eadestown but never got around to it yet. Was a bit disheartened given the attitudes of farmers over my own way that are closing it all up.

Just edited my last post to highlight your point above- though i subsequently was told not to take it personally as this guy treats everyone with equal contempt, hunters and neighbours alike:rolleyes: - such a pity as its prime sporting land for all types of game:(

Damned shame. I'm out on a new piece of ground in the morning. If it goes well and looks promising, you'll be welcome out sometime.

Very kind of you - though at the moment I'm juggling 2 new business start ups that mean I've recently spent far more time on the work computer/iphone talking about hunting, rather then actually getting out and doing some:rolleyes:. Hopefully next year it will be more the other way round all going well!!
