Turn off data roaming when you go abroad. You'll save yourself a fortune I tells ya!

Is it worth buying a pay as you go for phone say in the States if you are going to be over there a bit?

If this a "get away from it all" holiday, leave the phone at home!

Not really that kind of holiday. Have a sick relative at the moment as well so probably best to have it with me.

Take a mast with you, then you don't have to roam ;)

Data roaming is disabled by default on the iPhone but you can check it in Settings > General > Network

    Boom boom!

    Who are you with, OP?

Buy a pay as you go (pre-paid) SIM when you get there.
Then you are not using your SIM to receive calls or messages or internet charges.

leave the SIM behind when you leave.

As poster above said get pre pay sim when abroad. Also download HulloMail from the app store and set that up. If anyone then rings your Irish phone you get a notification of both missed calls and voicemail, you can check voice mail over data. Remember you will have to pay for the diverting of the call to HulloMail but that is an Irish call landline I think so in many cases not a problem. Also if you use Viber that will work, there is also good SMS apps Eirtext being one example will allow you to use your internet allowance of texts straight from your phone.

Doesn't HulloMail not work on prepay networks?

As far as I know it does, the issue maybe that you have to pay for each call that is diverted. But as the OP will only be using the app for his Irish number the US prepay sim will only be providing data.

    Ah, yes. Thanks.

Sorry, I was just wondering as it doesn't work here, in Ireland, on prepay.
I've got loads of minutes to use and I can't. Sadly.
