XBMC on laptop - what next?

Hi all, just looking for some opinions. I've been dabbling with XBMC on my main laptop lately, I really like it, and want to set myself up properly with some kit to stream media and browse internet to permanently connect to the TV.

In terms of set up, I have homeplug ethernet at the back of the tv in, but not much else. TV is HD ready but doesnt have Saorview (its a few years old, upgrading it may be a possibility, but at the expense of other bits of kit). I have DVD's that I hope to get onto NAS (which I will have to buy also) at some point. I've read lots here about Boxee & media players, building your own HTPC and running XBMC or the like off a nettop / spare pc, but I was just wondering what is a good / no fuss set up for streaming. Thanks :)

If it was really good, I could bin sky and spend that money on the system too!

    big piece of string question

You can have something as simple as XBMC on a laptop with the lid down hooked to the other end of the scale which is full on distributed TV server-client setup.

do you have any other kit other then the powerline adapters, a TV (what make/model?) and the laptop.

I'm somehwere between the boxee box and the apple tv at the moment, with a leaning to the apple tv. And some NAS.
