I'm wondering if the quote you get online is accurate of the one you get when you actually go in to pay it? Or will the online quote standup if there's a difference when you do go in?

If you put in all the details right, generally it tends to be the same. Was the same for mine last month anyway :)

Depends on the equipment fitted to the car, if there's more on it than the online quote is based on, and the NCT's staff member is clued in enough to realise it, you'll be charged more.

    How does that work?

    How does that work?

I think it's along the lines of optional extras fitted which are not part of standard spec, ie say you had heated or leather seats in a Volkswagen GTI they would be charged as extras and VRT payable on what depreciated value these options would now be worth.

Some inspectors may not notice what is standard and what is not on high end cars, might help your case if your apealing an amount if you could get hold or original Irish spec sheets for the car.

    How does that work?

As VRT is quoted on Revenues makey up OMSP, if the car has extra kit than what they "calculated" their OMSP on, they figure it's worth more so the VRT goes up...

Or at least that's what I'm assuming

But if you import say an M5 or an S-class, how they hell do they know whats standard and not not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

    They contact the manufacturer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Thats crazy, do they have a fixed charge for every extra the car shouldn't have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Not really - the manufacturer will tell them what the Irish price would have been with all the extras, and they work out depreciation and OMSP as normal then.

Ah, I see. So they just bump up the selling price and hence the VRT. Presumably only for the extras the inspector spots.

I vrtd a car recently and to put it in simple terms these nct vrt staff are idiots.I was vrting a 92 plate uk import that had originaly come from japan to the uk in 2004 so the uk log book had a date of first registration being 2004.My online quote was 640 and when i went down they tried to charge me 2450 and put an 04 plate on a 92 car it took days of arguing to get them to understand that these cars stopped being made in 96 and it that it was the date of manafacture that they should base it on not the uk log book wich only states the date of first registration they are a bunch of clowns .

I vrt'd a 05 golf 1.9tdi last year, I checked on the revenue website to see how much it would cost to clear and it was around 1200, went up to the nct centre to get it cleared, the woman then gave me a total of 1450.

I asked her why was it that when i got a different price online, she said thats what is coming up on the computer, she never mentioned anything about extras to me as there was alloys and bumper extensions on the car and back tinted windows, heated front seats and lowered. So im not really sure if extras has anything to do with it, I just think they have a different price, but it will likely be a few hundred extra not 1000's, thats from cars i have cleared before anyway.

Hope it helps and good luck :)

If you look at VRT manual section 8 at this link http://www.revenue.ie/en/about/foi/s16/templates/vehicle-registration-tax/ then in part 8.3.3. on page 7 you will find depreciation table for optional extras.

Basically if car is over 5 years old, then those extras are not included in calculations.

VRT is not charged on extras on cars over 4 years old.

Also the VRT calculator site tells you that it is a rough guide calculator and is not set in stone. Generally though the price is usually around the same unless the extras qualify for VRT too or you entered incorrect data. They just type the car's VIN into a database and it tells them the spec of the car. If the VIN is not on their system they contact Revenue in Rosslare who will in turn come back to you in a week or so with a VRT figure.
